What to compare before buying

The custodian runs your IRA while Advantage Gold supplies the metal. The purchase, account administration and vault storage belong to separate organizations. Advantage Gold helps arrange IRA purchases and names recommended custodians and storage providers. Get a single written account of the costs and roles before authorizing a transfer.

Who Advantage Gold suits

Advantage Gold is worth comparing if you want help arranging an IRA and value having a choice of recommended custodians. American Bullion provides a useful contract comparison because its October 2024 agreement includes a conditional charge if an assisted account is opened but no metal order follows.

A person who wants the lowest total charge for a small holding should make the comparison carefully. A fixed annual charge is a larger share of a small balance than a large one, even if the dollar amount is identical. If your existing retirement account offers low-cost diversified funds and you are considering only a modest allocation to gold, the extra layers of administration may outweigh the value you place on holding physical metal. A gold fund and a physical IRA are different assets and arrangements, so compare their risks as well as their fees.

What the company does

Advantage Gold assists with precious-metals IRAs and offers direct purchases. Those are two separate decisions. With a direct purchase, the buyer owns metal outside the IRA and arranges delivery under the transaction terms. An IRA purchase sends the assets to an approved vault under the custodian's instructions. Advantage Gold offers direct delivery for purchases outside an IRA.

A dealer can help with paperwork, but it cannot make every retirement plan eligible for a distribution. An existing employer plan may limit when money can leave. A direct transfer between IRA custodians and a rollover are also not interchangeable in every circumstance. Confirm the method with both the sending plan and receiving custodian before signing, particularly if money would be paid to you personally. The IRS explains the distinction and potential tax consequences in its rollover guidance.

You do not have to move your entire retirement account to compare a quote. Decide first what portion, if any, you want exposed to physical metals. Then ask whether the dollar amount is large enough for the proposed account, what cash reserve the custodian requires for charges, and whether an existing plan can send that amount. A conversation with the company can clarify its process, but the final decision should rest on documents from the actual account providers.

Where the dealer’s guidance ends

Advantage Gold’s website disclosures say that its representatives are not licensed or registered investment advisers, attorneys or tax professionals, and that the company does not provide those professional services. That distinction matters when a conversation turns from arranging a purchase to deciding whether a rollover or allocation is appropriate for your finances. The company can explain the products it sells and its process, but a recommendation to buy metal should not be treated as a personal tax or investment plan.

For example, a saver comparing an existing diversified retirement portfolio with an Advantage Gold purchase has two decisions to make. The first is whether physical metal belongs in the allocation at all. The second is which product, account and storage arrangement to use if it does. The dealer’s proposal can help answer the second question, but the first depends on the saver’s other assets, need for liquidity and ability to tolerate a decline. This distinction is especially useful when a promotion encourages a larger purchase: the size of a promotional benefit does not determine how much retirement money a particular saver should commit. A qualified adviser who understands the whole account can help assess those factors before the transfer begins.

Advantage Gold also discusses physical gold alongside gold funds. Their mechanics differ: a fund represents an interest in an investment product, while this IRA purchase involves a specific metal holding and separate custody and storage arrangements. Neither structure automatically produces a better return. Compare the investment’s actual fees, risks and ability to be sold when needed, rather than treating a difference in form as a promise of safety. The trade-off matters most to someone who wants gold exposure but is uncertain whether holding specific metal is worth the additional account arrangements.

Metals and IRA eligibility

Advantage Gold offers four precious-metal categories for retirement accounts. Each coin or bar must independently satisfy the IRA rules. The IRS rules address fineness and eligible forms, including exceptions for certain coins. The IRS discussion of IRA investments explains the restriction on collectibles and the exceptions for qualifying bullion and coins.

Ask for the precise product name, weight, quantity and price on the proposed order. Have your custodian approve the specific item before ordering. A proof or collectible coin may be priced differently from a common bullion coin, so comparing only the total dollar amount can hide a meaningful difference in what you receive. If one quote contains a different product, request a second quote for the same item before treating the prices as competing offers.

The choice between a large bar and smaller coins has practical consequences too. Selling a portion of a holding later requires a saleable unit. Smaller units may provide more flexibility, but their premiums can differ. Ask for both purchase and potential resale quotes for the exact products under consideration. Neither a current quote nor a past spread guarantees the price available when you sell.

Custodian and storage choices

The custodian and the vault do different jobs. The custodian administers the IRA and its reporting; the depository stores the metal. Advantage Gold names Delaware Depository and Brink's locations in Los Angeles and Salt Lake City. Confirm the available vault, account relationship, insurance terms and storage type for your order.

Ask whether your metals are held on a segregated basis or together with equivalent metals belonging to other customers. Segregated storage can mean your specific items are kept separately, while commingled storage generally describes pooled storage of equivalent assets. The actual contract controls what you own and what is returned. Do not assume a label alone resolves the question; obtain the depository's terms and ask how holdings are identified on your account statement.

Also ask who pays for shipping between vaults, what happens if the custodian or depository changes, and how an insurance claim would be handled. Insurance language deserves particular attention: ask what the policy covers, any exclusions and the basis for valuing a loss. A statement that a vault is insured does not by itself tell you whether every loss or the full market value of every holding is covered.

Fees and purchase price

Obtain the current IRA minimum, setup charge and annual fee in writing from the dealer and selected custodian.

The quote needs these separate cost components:

  • The dealer's price for the particular coins or bars, including any premium over the underlying metal value.
  • Any account opening or transaction charge from the custodian.
  • Annual administration and storage charges, including differences between storage choices.
  • Shipping, insurance, wire or other transaction charges where applicable.
  • The difference between your purchase cost and a subsequent offer to sell.

A fee waiver changes the timing of an expense, not necessarily the cost of the metal. If a promotion covers the first year, ask what happens in later years and whether the offer depends on a minimum purchase or particular products. Compare the full order with and without the promotion instead of treating the advertised saving as the whole price.

The company's risk disclosures refer to markups and commissions. They do not establish a universal percentage for your order. Request an itemized quote and a separate, time-stamped bid for the same items, if available. The difference is a useful indication of the immediate round-trip cost under those assumptions, but bids can change and a later sale may produce a different result.

A hypothetical comparison

Suppose you want to allocate $20,000 to physical metals inside an IRA. Dealer A offers the same identified bullion products for $20,000, while Dealer B offers them for $19,400. Assume, purely for illustration, that Dealer A's account and storage charges total $250 each year and Dealer B's total $350 each year. These are invented inputs for the example, not quotations or current fees for either company.

Hypothetical five-year cost, identical products
CostDealer ADealer B
Purchase$20,000$19,400
Annual account and storage$250$350
Five-year total$21,250$21,150

The lower initial purchase price does not settle the ongoing cost. If fees are paid from the initial account cash, both accounts face a shortfall over the modeled period. Each would need a permitted funding source or a sale of holdings; the example does not assume either is available. Interest, sale costs, taxes, price movements and fee changes are excluded.

Choose the lower modeled total only if the services meet your needs, and substitute your own written numbers. If an annual charge is based on asset value rather than fixed, request a schedule showing how it changes as the balance moves. The fee calculator can help compare the assumptions once you have them.

Choosing between the named account arrangements

Advantage Gold recommends STRATA Trust and Equity Trust and works with Delaware Depository and Brink's. Those names give buyers a starting point, but neither custodian necessarily accepts every item or offers every vault. Ask each custodian for the fee schedule and the storage choices available for the identical proposed order. If your preferred vault or product is unavailable with one account, the difference is substantive, not just a fee comparison.

Consider how you would use the account after the initial order. Ask each custodian whether it permits purchases from another dealer, how it handles a partial sale and whether it charges for each transaction. Check how the depository identifies your coins and what happens if you later want a distribution in kind. A lower annual amount may be less attractive if it does not cover the transaction or storage arrangement you need.

If your existing retirement plan already serves your needs, weigh the additional dealer, custodian and vault relationships before moving funds. Ask the sending plan about a partial transfer and any exit charge. A physical IRA may suit a buyer who specifically wants vaulted metal; someone seeking only a small gold exposure should also compare the cost and risks of alternatives available in the existing account.

How Advantage Gold’s buyback promise fits the decision

Advantage Gold says in its FAQ that it will not turn away a customer seeking a buyback. That statement is useful to a buyer who wants a dealer to contact when it is time to sell, but the FAQ directs readers to contact the company for more information. It does not set out a fixed price, a bid formula or a complete list of eligible items. Ask the company to explain the promise in writing for the exact products on your proposed order, including any conditions and costs.

The distinction between access to a buyer and the amount received matters. An investor can have a route to request a sale while still facing a bid lower than the original purchase price. A current bid can help illustrate that difference, but it cannot lock in the future market. Keep the product description, quantity and original invoice so that a later offer can be assessed against the actual holdings. If you would like to consider another buyer, ask the custodian how an outside sale would be instructed and settled inside the IRA.

The company also describes both cash liquidation and taking physical possession as distribution possibilities. Those choices have different practical consequences. Cash liquidation requires a sale first, while an in-kind distribution means receiving the metal and arranging its subsequent storage yourself. Neither choice eliminates the need to understand the account’s distribution rules and the tax treatment of the particular withdrawal. Ask the custodian for the process and seek advice suited to your account before deciding.

Selling and taking a distribution

Selling metal inside an IRA and taking money out of an IRA are separate events. The sale may leave cash in the account; a distribution moves cash or assets out under the account's tax rules. The IRS rules govern those distributions. Before taking money out, discuss the timing and possible tax consequences with both the account provider and your adviser.

Alternatives to consider

American Bullion is another dealer to compare if you want assistance with an IRA rollover. American Bullion assists with eligible rollovers. Ask each firm for the same products, receiving custodian, storage arrangement and fee period so the difference in price is meaningful. American Bullion's transaction agreement says repurchase is not guaranteed, making its sale terms worth reading before purchase.

BullionVault offers another approach for a buyer who wants to hold and trade professional-format vaulted bullion. It uses a separate IRA custodian for retirement holdings and does not offer the same retail-coin format. Compare its execution, storage and withdrawal terms with the Advantage Gold account before choosing.

For a comparison of another assisted IRA dealer, see National Gold Group vs. Advantage Gold. Use the comparison to distinguish the account setup help from the separate custodian and depository terms.

Frequently asked questions

Does Advantage Gold offer a gold IRA?

Yes. Advantage Gold helps arrange precious-metals IRA purchases. The dealer, IRA custodian and depository have different responsibilities. Ask the company to name the parties for your proposed account and supply their agreements before transferring money. Confirm which custodian accepts the exact product and vault arrangement.

What is the minimum investment?

Ask Advantage Gold for its current IRA minimum. Ask for the current minimum for your chosen account and product, and whether it applies to the initial order, account balance or each purchase. Do not assume that a minimum quoted by a third party still applies.

Can I keep IRA gold at home?

A direct cash purchase and a retirement-account holding are different. For an IRA, discuss custody and storage with the qualified custodian before taking possession. The IRS IRA investment rules address the permitted types and holding requirements; taking assets out can have distribution consequences.

Does Advantage Gold guarantee a buyback price?

Advantage Gold offers buyback but does not publish a guaranteed price formula. Request the current policy and a bid for your exact items, including any handling or shipping charges. A bid available today does not set the price for a future sale. Ask whether your custodian permits a competing buyer and what vault-release charges would apply.
