Count the account and the transaction separately
Your dealer quote and the bills for administering the account answer different questions. A low opening charge cannot tell you whether the metal is competitively priced. Get a purchase price and a same-day buyback bid for identical items, then put the difference into the gold spread checker.
Enter the fixed annual account and storage charges separately even when a representative combines them in one sales estimate. This makes it easier to see what a waiver actually removes. A waived vault bill does not automatically remove administration, shipment, dealing or distribution charges.
The CFTC/FINRA metals checklist recommends obtaining written charges and a current repurchase price before buying. Use those written terms for the account and transaction figures in this estimate.
Read the price-rise result as a hurdle
The percentage asks how quickly the initial resale value would have to increase to equal your purchase amount plus the account bills. The result does not predict gold prices. It assumes smooth growth and ignores the path prices take along the way.
If the metal falls before you need to sell, a calculated annual hurdle does not protect your capital. The gold IRA costs guide explains why purchase terms and recurring bills should be considered together. Fees taken from the IRA itself also change the model: assets sold to pay a bill cannot continue growing as assumed here.
Use equivalent quotes before comparing totals
Keep the intended purchase, storage rights, custodian services and holding period consistent. A different mix of coins can change the purchase-to-buyback loss substantially. Obtain the exact terms that apply when a promotion ends or a balance changes, rather than extending a temporary waiver across the whole period.
For a staged waiver or rising annual fee, prepare a year-by-year schedule instead of using one fixed charge. The annual fee comparison can isolate two steady recurring bills. You can then assess the
National Gold Group review or another provider against the service and qualification terms behind its quote.
Calculator FAQs
Is the price-rise result a forecast?
No. It is the constant annual change required under the inputs and assumptions you selected. It does not estimate the likelihood of that change, model price volatility or establish whether a metals allocation is suitable for you.
What does the loss percentage measure?
It measures the gap between the amount you pay and the same-day buyback value as a share of your payment. A dealer markup over its acquisition cost uses a different denominator and must not be entered as though it were the same percentage.
Can a temporary fee waiver be modeled here?
Only as a simplified scenario. This form repeats one annual bill over the entire holding period. If the waiver ends, changes with your balance or covers selected charges, use a separate schedule for each affected year before comparing the complete cost.
Does the calculation include taxes or required distributions?
No. It models the entered bills and initial transaction loss only. Taxes, required distributions, later selling costs, account withdrawals and income are excluded. A financial or tax professional can assess how those rules apply to your account.
Do I have to enter my real account balance?
No. The starting amounts are examples, and you can replace them with other hypothetical figures. This calculator uses the numbers entered in the page; it does not retrieve a retirement balance or contact a custodian. No account name, document upload or financial-service login is needed to explore the estimate.
