Match the product before comparing the prices
A purchase quote for one coin and a bid for a different bar cannot establish the transaction gap. Match the mint, metal, fine weight, condition and quantity. Use the same currency and note whether a card surcharge, delivery charge or other purchase cost sits outside the quoted price.
A premium above the value of the metal answers a separate question. The gold premium calculator compares an item with its fine-metal spot value, while this tool compares two sides of an actual dealing quote. Collect both measures when deciding whether a collectible premium changes your resale risk.
A two-way quotation matters because purchase and resale prices differ. The CFTC/FINRA explanation of dealer spreads supports requesting both sides before judging a precious-metals offer.
The recovery percentage uses a smaller base
The initial loss is measured against the amount you paid. Recovering it requires the lower resale value to rise, so the recovery percentage uses the buyback bid as its denominator. Those two percentages should differ whenever the quotes differ.
The bid you obtain today is not a commitment to repurchase later at that price. Product demand, condition, inspection rules and the dealer margin can change. The spread and premium guide gives a worked example of the different bases without treating either as a return forecast.
Inspect the terms behind the bid
Ask when the dealer locks the bid, how long it remains valid, and what shipment or inspection conditions can reduce the amount paid. A quotation before inspection may be subject to deductions. A buyback program name cannot establish the net amount that will reach your account.
For retirement assets, ask the custodian how sale instructions, shipping and settlement are authorized. The gold IRA buyback guide separates an agreed sale from an advertisement that a dealer buys metals. Compare the written process before deciding how much near-term liquidity the holding provides.
Calculator FAQs
Does this calculate a markup over spot?
No. It compares your purchase payment with the dealer buyback bid. A spot premium uses the value of the fine metal as its base. The measures can differ because a resale bid may include a discount, a premium or product-specific dealing conditions.
Why can the second percentage be higher?
It starts from the smaller buyback amount. The price paid measures what you lose initially, while the bid measures what must grow to recover that loss. Changing the denominator changes the percentage even though the dollar gap stays the same.
Is a buyback program a guaranteed exit price?
No. The program may describe the process for requesting a bid without fixing a future price or guaranteeing a purchase. Read the actual agreement, including inspection, shipping, settlement and product restrictions, before relying on it for access to cash.
Where should separately charged costs go?
Compare them alongside the result rather than assuming they are included. Taxes, shipping, insurance and account charges can change your net cost. Use a consistent delivered purchase cost and net sale basis if you include those amounts in the two inputs.
Can I compare example quotes without sharing account details?
Yes. Only the two price fields are used, so you can compare hypothetical offers without entering a name, account number or financial login. The calculator does not fetch dealer bids or access your holdings. A result describes the numbers you chose, rather than confirming an actual account or executable offer.
