Start with your account records
Identify the coins or bars, quantities and custody arrangement shown on your statement. Then ask your custodian how to request a sale, what documents it needs, and which buyers it can work with under the account agreement. A dealer may offer to buy metal back, but the custodian administers the IRA and must process the transaction according to its procedures. The custodian and dealer guide distinguishes their respective roles.
Ask whether the metal must leave its current depository and, if so, who arranges shipment and insurance.
Delaware Depository says IRA account holders should contact their custodian to request shipment. That is one facility's procedure; your account agreement and custodian determine the steps for your arrangement. Its FAQ describes the distinction between IRA and personal storage accounts.
The statement's displayed value and an executable purchase offer can differ. Ask what the statement value represents and when it was determined. A buyer's written offer should identify the exact products, quantities, applicable deductions and expiration. Do not assume an estimated value is the amount a buyer will pay today.
Retirees planning withdrawals can use the retiree guide to connect a possible sale with distribution planning.
An available sale route is not automatically a confirmed bid or a promised settlement date.

Get a quote for the same metal
Contact a buyer that can handle the product and the custody arrangement. Request the total amount it will pay, how it determines the price, how long the offer is valid and whether inspection, shipping or payment costs reduce the proceeds. Ask whether the offer is binding and what conditions could change it. A stated buyback program does not guarantee a particular future price.
If you have the original purchase confirmation, compare it with the current bid for the same items. The CFTC describes the difference between a dealer's selling and buying prices as the spread. Its physical-metals advisory explains why both sides of a transaction matter. Price changes between purchase and sale also affect your result, so a historical purchase price and today's bid are not a same-time spread.
Hypothetical example, not a provider quotation:
| Illustrative assumption or result | Amount |
|---|---|
| Purchase price | $10,000 |
| Same-time repurchase bid | $9,000 |
| Quotation gap before other costs | $1,000 |
Use the gold spread checker for matching purchase and repurchase quotes taken at the same time. The illustration is not a current offer; actual sale proceeds and holding costs require their own records.
Compare buyers on the same terms
A higher headline bid is useful only if the remaining terms are comparable. Ask whether each offer covers the same product, quantity and condition, and whether the buyer requires shipment or inspection before confirming the price. Check who bears the cost and risk while the metal is moving and how payment reaches the IRA. If an offer omits a fee, record it as unknown until the buyer or custodian confirms it.
Take the quotes close together in time when possible. Gold prices and dealer bids can move, and an expired quote is not a current offer. Keep the timestamp and expiration with the written terms. If you cannot compare identical products or services, state the difference in your notes rather than treating the amounts as directly equivalent.
Ask your custodian whether it can process a transaction with each prospective buyer. An unlisted buyer is not necessarily prohibited, but the custodian may have documentation or operational requirements. Confirm them before accepting a time-limited bid. Also ask how long settlement normally takes under the proposed transaction and what evidence you will receive when funds arrive.
Retain the accepted bid, inspection result, release instruction and final settlement record together so you can reconcile the amount actually credited.
Sale inside the IRA vs distribution
A sale of an IRA asset and a distribution to you are separate steps. Ask the custodian where the sale proceeds will be held and how they appear on the account statement. If your intention is to keep the proceeds in the IRA, make that instruction clear. The availability and terms for holding cash or purchasing another asset depend on the account agreement.
If you instead want money or metal distributed to you, ask how the custodian values, processes and reports that distribution. The tax result depends on the account type and your personal circumstances. IRS Publication 590-B covers IRA distributions, including rules relevant to property and collectibles. A qualified tax professional can help you assess your situation before you authorize a distribution.
For an in-kind distribution, ask what product you will receive, how its value is determined, who arranges shipping and which charges apply. If the storage arrangement is non-segregated, check whether the contract provides equivalent items or the exact original items. The storage guide explains the questions to ask about return rights.

Costs to include in the decision
A buyback quote is the starting point, not necessarily the final proceeds. Ask about custodian transaction fees, depository release charges, inspection, shipping, insurance and payment charges where they apply. Compare the amounts with the account and storage agreements. If the buyer pays a cost that would otherwise be yours, ask whether that benefit is reflected elsewhere in the offer.
Hypothetical example, not a provider quotation:
| Illustrative assumption or result | Amount |
|---|---|
| Illustrative sale bid | $9,000 |
| Transaction and shipping charges | $150 |
| Proceeds before other costs or taxes | $8,850 |
The $8,850 assumes the bid and the listed charges remain unchanged through settlement. Confirm who can revise the bid after inspection and which party pays each cost.
Do not forget recurring administration and storage costs already incurred while holding the asset. They are separate from the buyer's current bid, but they matter when you evaluate the overall experience. Keep the original purchase confirmation and annual statements so you can reconstruct the actual amounts rather than relying on an estimate.
Hypothetical Sale Proceeds
Questions to ask before accepting
- What exact items and quantities does the bid cover, and when does it expire?
- Is the offer binding before inspection, and what could change it?
- Which custodian and depository instructions are required?
- Who pays for release, shipping, insurance, inspection and payment?
- Where will the sale proceeds be credited, and what confirmation will I receive?
- If I request a distribution, what value, fees and reporting apply?
- Can I obtain another comparable offer within the required time?
Read the purchase agreement or sale confirmation before accepting. If a buyer or custodian cannot identify a cost or a step, obtain that answer before authorizing movement of the metal. A clear written bid and a documented handoff make the final proceeds easier to verify.
Frequently asked questions
Must I sell to the dealer that originally sold me the gold?
Ask your custodian which buyers it can process and what documentation is needed. A dealer's buyback program is one possible route, but an unlisted buyer is not automatically unavailable. Compare written offers for the same metal and confirm the custody and settlement process before accepting.
Is the value on my IRA statement a guaranteed buyback price?
No. Ask the custodian what the statement value represents and when it was determined. A buyer's current offer may differ and may be subject to inspection, fees or an expiration. Obtain an executable written quote for the actual products and quantities.
Is selling metal inside an IRA the same as taking a distribution?
They are separate transactions. Ask the custodian how sale proceeds remain in or leave the account and what instructions are required. A distribution's tax treatment depends on your account type and circumstances; therefore consult a qualified tax professional before directing one.
Can I receive the metal instead of selling it?
Ask your custodian about an in-kind distribution, including the property returned, valuation, shipping, charges and reporting. The storage agreement may affect whether you receive the original items or equivalent products. Consider the tax consequences with a qualified professional first.
