Blanchard and Company review

Blanchard and Company suits collectors choosing rare coins alongside bullion, including buyers considering a separate qualifying IRA purchase. For a saver whose priority is metal exposure through a standard bullion item, APMEX provides a more direct product comparison; a collectible premium makes sense only when you value the individual coin.

Gold IRA Master is part of National Gold Group, one of the companies compared on this site.

Who Blanchard suits

Blanchard is a good fit for a collector who wants help sourcing particular coins while retaining the option to buy ordinary bullion. The company offers numismatic research and a dedicated portfolio manager. That combination matters when the task is finding a particular type or completing a collection, rather than simply acquiring a weight of gold.

For someone building a holding of common bullion, APMEX is a useful counterpoint: start with the item you intend to own and compare its purchase cost. Blanchard's additional coin expertise is valuable when you will use it. It does not by itself justify paying more for metal exposure.

The IRA buyer has a third concern: whether the proposed item belongs in a retirement account. Blanchard offers an IRA purchase service, but the collectible side of its business and the retirement-account side should remain distinct decisions. Choose an eligible product for the account first; consider a separate rare-coin purchase on its own merits.

Bullion and rare coins

Bullion gives you exposure mainly to its metal content; a rare coin adds a price that depends on the particular object. Scarcity and condition can make two coins containing the same amount of gold worth different sums. That is the central reason to separate a Blanchard proposal into bullion and collectible purchases before judging its value.

For a bullion holding, compare the same coin or bar in the same condition. Delivery and payment charges belong beside the product price, because a small product discount can disappear in the final amount. A mixed package containing several different pieces is harder to compare than individually priced items.

A collector may deliberately pay for a particular date or grade. A saver who only wants a given metal weight has less reason to accept that premium. Neither objective is inherently better, but a proposal should not quietly substitute one for the other. If the explanation for a specialty coin does not interest you, standard bullion is the clearer starting point.

Product size also changes flexibility. A holding made up of several pieces may allow a partial sale without selling the whole position, whereas one large item has to find a buyer for that item. The extra flexibility can carry a higher purchase premium. Evaluate the unit you expect to sell as well as the total weight you intend to buy.

Blanchard's IRA service

Blanchard sells gold and silver for self-directed IRAs and helps buyers arrange the purchase. Its IRA service also sets out platinum and palladium fineness standards. Those standards are a starting point for eligibility, not a promise that every metal or catalog item is available for your account.

The company identifies GoldStar Trust as a custodian it works with and says it can also help a buyer use another IRS-approved custodial institution. That flexibility is useful if you already have a compatible account. It still requires the chosen institution to accept the actual investment and the proposed transaction.

The IRS collectibles rules allow specified exceptions for certain coins and bullion. A rare coin's desirability to a collector does not create another exception. Custodian acceptance of the individual item matters more than a broad label such as investment grade or precious metal.

Blanchard's stated policy of no additional premium for IRA-designated purchases concerns its dealer pricing. Custodian administration and depository storage remain separate costs. This is a useful distinction for a buyer evaluating both direct ownership and an IRA: using the same dealer does not make the two arrangements financially identical.

If you already hold a self-directed account, the option to work with another custodian gives you a reason to compare keeping that account with opening a new one. The existing institution still needs to approve the proposed assets and transaction. Consider any transfer charge and the longer-term schedule before changing institutions. Familiarity between a dealer and its usual custodian may make coordination easier, but it should not replace your comparison of the account arrangements available to you.

Funding the retirement account

Use the funding route appropriate to your existing account before agreeing to a metal purchase. A transfer from an IRA and a rollover from an employer plan follow different procedures. The sending institution determines whether the funds can leave, while the receiving custodian determines what it can accept.

The IRS distinguishes direct rollovers and IRA transfers from a distribution paid to you. Money passing through your hands can introduce deadlines and withholding that do not apply in the same way to a direct movement. Agree the instructions with both institutions before requesting payment.

An employer plan can restrict access for an employee who still works there. A partial movement, where permitted, also changes how much remains available for other investments. The dealer's ability to sell you metals does not establish that your existing plan can release the intended amount.

Set the allocation according to your finances before choosing products. Physical metal pays no interest and its value can fall; account charges still need to be paid. Leave the custodian's required cash reserve out of the purchase budget rather than discovering after the order that recurring charges have no funding source.

Custody and storage

The custodian administers your IRA, while a depository stores the metal. Blanchard describes holdings through GoldStar as segregated from other clients' assets. For an account buyer, the useful question is how that arrangement appears in the actual storage agreement and inventory record.

Segregation should not be confused with unrestricted personal access. An IRA holding remains subject to account and distribution procedures. If taking physical possession is your main objective, compare a direct purchase with an IRA distribution before making the choice, including the possible tax consequences.

A storage contract should identify the facility and explain how your holdings are recorded. Insurance needs its own terms, including the risks covered and the basis for valuing a loss. The presence of a vault does not answer what a particular policy would pay. These documents matter most when you are choosing between otherwise similar account proposals.

The account statement is a reporting record, not an executable offer to buy your coins. Its valuation may differ from an item-specific resale bid. For a holder expecting to sell gradually, transaction charges and the process for releasing part of the inventory deserve more weight than a small first-year discount.

Purchase price and account costs

Compare the metal purchase and the account schedule separately, then assess their combined effect over your intended holding period. Blanchard's no-additional-IRA-premium policy does not settle the cost of administration or storage. A lower product quote can therefore coexist with a more expensive account arrangement.

Your written comparison needs these distinct cost lines:

  • The itemized metal purchase, with the product, condition and quantity identified.
  • Custodian opening and recurring administration charges, including any minimum.
  • Storage and insurance charges under the chosen depository arrangement.
  • Transaction and exit costs that apply to the account you intend to use.

Use the same product specification in both proposals. A value-based charge can move with your account valuation, whereas a fixed charge stays the same until the schedule changes. A larger balance can reduce a fixed charge as a percentage, but that is not a reason to increase an allocation beyond your financial plan.

For direct ownership, Blanchard accepts several payment methods. Choose the method you will actually use before judging the final quote. The payment event that locks the order and any cancellation provision belong in that decision because a moving metal price can make an abandoned order costly.

A hypothetical comparison

Two hypothetical IRA offers for identical bullion can reach the same total despite different purchase prices. The following USD amounts are invented; neither column quotes Blanchard or any other dealer.

Illustrative bullion and account costs
CostFirst offerSecond offer
Purchase$15,000$14,700
Annual fee$200$300
Three-year total$15,600$15,600

Both offers assume fixed annual charges and equivalent storage. Opening costs, taxes, cash reserves, sale costs and metal-price changes are excluded. Equal totals therefore answer a narrow purchase-and-holding-cost question; they do not establish equal returns or equal contract terms.

Use the fee calculator with the actual account schedules and your planned holding period. A buyer expecting to hold longer should pay particular attention to recurring charges. Someone likely to need a partial sale sooner should give the transaction and release provisions more weight.

Evaluating a rare coin quote

For a rare coin, establish the grade and certification before deciding whether its premium is justified. The invoice should identify the individual coin closely enough for another specialist to assess it. A description that supplies only metal weight leaves out the very features for which a collector may be paying.

Independent grading can help buyers describe and compare coins, but a grade is not a guaranteed future price. The particular date and mint may attract a different group of collectors from another coin with the same weight. Compare coins with equivalent identifying details rather than treating all examples of a broad design as interchangeable.

Blanchard's sourcing service is particularly relevant when the wanted item is specific. A collector can use that service to pursue a defined gap in a collection. A buyer who has not decided what kind of coin to collect should first understand the proposed item's appeal; specialist assistance should explain the purchase rather than become the reason for it.

Keep the grading holder and certification information intact until you understand the return conditions. If a description or independent assessment differs from the offer, the agreement determines the route for resolving it. For an IRA, eligibility remains a separate gate even after you are satisfied with the coin's quality and price.

Comparing Blanchard with a competing quote

Blanchard's October 2026 statement that it would seek to match or beat a lower internet price gives a buyer a reason to present a competing offer. It is an aspiration, not a promise that every cheaper listing qualifies for a match. Treat the resulting written quote as the offer you can evaluate.

This is most useful when a dealer can identify the exact same bullion item. A different grade or delivery condition can explain part of a headline price difference. For a unique rare coin, another example may be informative without being an equivalent substitute. Negotiating against a genuinely comparable offer is more useful than demanding that unlike coins carry the same price.

Selling to Blanchard

Blanchard offers a buyback guarantee, with repurchase at the current market bid for assets bought from it. The selling terms also describe reviewing assets purchased elsewhere before locking an offer. That distinction matters if your existing collection includes coins from several sources.

A committed buyer can simplify finding an exit, but it does not protect your original purchase price. The relevant comparison is the net amount you would receive for the identified item. Rare-coin condition and collector demand can affect that bid alongside changes in the metal market.

For an item bought elsewhere, sending it for inspection may create costs before you have a final offer. Establish how a revised bid can be accepted or declined and how the item would be returned. Keep the product description with the shipment record so that the discussion concerns the same coin and condition.

Selling a holding inside an IRA can leave the proceeds as cash in that account. Taking cash or metal out of the IRA is a separate distribution under IRA withdrawal rules. A buyer planning to spend the proceeds should account for that distinction before treating the dealer's bid as cash available personally.

Before committing to Blanchard

Proceed when the proposed product serves your actual objective and the written terms explain its full cost. For Blanchard, the decisive unresolved questions belong in one conversation:

  • What exact item and condition will be delivered for the stated amount?
  • When does the quoted price become binding, and what cancellation terms follow?
  • For an IRA, which custodian and storage arrangement will govern the holding?
  • What would selling or moving this particular item require?

The answers should turn a broad proposal into an identifiable purchase. For a collector, that means knowing which coin you want and why its premium is acceptable. For an IRA saver, it means an eligible item inside an account whose recurring charges you can sustain.

If the product changes before confirmation, reconsider that purchase on the revised terms. A substitute with the same dollar total can change both the metal content and the collector exposure. The dealer's breadth is helpful only when it leaves you with a choice you understand.

Alternatives to Blanchard

APMEX is the comparison to make when your target is a familiar bullion product and a collectible's individual history adds little to your goal. Compare that product with Blanchard's offer before accepting a specialty-coin substitution. This is a difference in the purchase you want to make, not a claim that either dealer always has a lower price.

American Bullion offers retirement rollover assistance for a saver whose main concern is moving an existing account into precious metals. Compare that account-focused route with Blanchard's proposed IRA arrangement. Blanchard's stronger fit remains the buyer who has a genuine use for its rare-coin expertise alongside its bullion offering.

How we checked this. Provider statements use the October 24, 2026 primary-source research, with Blanchard and American Bullion pages rendered again November 5. IRS material was checked November 5, 2026. APMEX retailer and website-product-listing evidence comes from accepted October 24 first-party excerpts. No current product price is quoted. Historical policy statements do not replace the agreements for a proposed order.

Frequently asked questions

Does Blanchard offer precious-metals IRA purchases?

Yes. Blanchard sells metals for self-directed retirement accounts through its IRA service. The chosen custodian must accept the particular investment and administer the account. Separate the dealer’s metal price from custody and storage charges before deciding how much of your available account balance can be used for the purchase.

Can every rare coin be held in an IRA?

No. A coin’s collector appeal does not make it eligible for a retirement account. The IRS allows specified exceptions for certain coins and bullion while restricting collectibles generally. Confirm the individual item with the custodian; a qualifying metal or a familiar design alone does not settle acceptance of a particular purchase.

Does a buyback guarantee mean I recover my purchase price?

No. Blanchard’s commitment refers to a current market bid, which can be lower than your original payment. A collectible premium may change with the market for that individual coin. Obtain an offer for the identified item and account for the sale’s applicable deductions before deciding whether to accept it.

What fees should I request?

Obtain an itemized purchase quote and the selected custodian’s complete charge schedule. For an IRA, administration and storage can recur even after the initial metal purchase is complete. Include applicable transaction and exit charges for the way you expect to use the account, rather than comparing product prices alone.
