What to compare before buying
For a direct catalog quote, compare
APMEX. The purchase threshold, product price and custodian charges deserve separate attention.
Goldco describes gold and silver IRA purchases, direct orders and a buyback program. Ask for the exact products and current terms before deciding whether the service fits your intended allocation.
Who
Goldco suits
Goldco is a useful comparison for a saver who has decided that physical metals belong in a self-directed IRA and wants a specialist to discuss the account process. Its gold IRA page describes rollover assistance, and its silver IRA page discusses eligible metals and account costs. The sending plan and receiving custodian still determine whether a particular movement and product are accepted.
Goldco has described separate IRA and personal-purchase minimums. Confirm the requirements for an initial order and for later additions. A saver planning several smaller purchases needs to know whether each must clear the threshold on its own; meeting a total account balance does not necessarily qualify every later order. Keep the intended allocation fixed while deciding whether this purchasing pattern fits the dealer’s conditions.
A buyer focused on a small direct bullion order can compare the same coin at
APMEX. A catalog price alone does not decide an IRA purchase, however. For a retirement account, obtain the custodian and storage schedules and compare the entire relationship with
Goldco's proposal.
Before accepting a product substitution, ask whether it qualifies for the same promotion and whether the custodian accepts it. Obtain a revised line-item order showing the price and quantities. If the initial transfer is larger than the amount spent on metals, confirm where the remaining cash is held and how it will be used to pay account charges. Ask whether a later purchase triggers another transaction fee or a new order minimum. The order confirmation, custodian schedule and offer terms should agree on the essential details. If they do not, request a written correction from the responsible company before authorizing the purchase.
IRA or direct purchase
Goldco describes both an IRA service and direct purchases of gold and silver. In an IRA, a custodian administers the account and an approved depository stores the assets. For cash purchases, the buyer takes delivery and arranges safeguarding. The two routes have different account charges and tax consequences, so ask which agreement applies to your proposed order.
Goldco says it works with major self-directed IRA custodians. Ask
Goldco to name the custodian for your proposal, provide its fee schedule and explain whether you can choose another. A statement that several custodians are supported does not establish which one will accept your account and products.
For direct delivery, the company's buying page describes payment by wire or mailed check. Confirm the current payment options, when funds are considered good and when the product price is locked. Ask who insures shipment, how a delay is communicated and what the agreement says about cancellation or replacement products.
Moving retirement funds
Before account setup, confirm the existing plan allows the proposed movement. Access can be limited while you still work for the plan sponsor. Check partial-transfer eligibility, any required asset sales and the outgoing charge.
Direct plan rollovers, transfers between IRA trustees and payments to you follow different procedures. IRS rollover guidance explains the different procedures. Get instructions from both institutions and consult a tax adviser if the treatment is unclear.
Find out if the account provider needs cash reserved for fees. A mandatory reserve reduces the money immediately available for the order. Establish how charges are deducted and whether additional cash can be added. A fixed annual fee represents a greater share of a smaller account, but a larger transfer can concentrate more retirement savings in one asset class.
A dealer's rollover assistance does not determine the right allocation. Metal values may decline, and physical holdings generate no income. Evaluate the allocation against your broader savings and expected withdrawals before choosing a product or offer.
Eligible metals and product choice
Goldco's silver IRA information discusses gold, silver, platinum and palladium in eligible accounts. Publication 590-B explains the restrictions on collectibles and exceptions for qualifying IRA metals. Ask the custodian to approve the exact product, weight and form before ordering.
Request a line-item quote with each coin or bar, its quantity and total price. If a proposal emphasizes premium coins, ask for a common bullion comparison and the reason for the difference. A product can carry value beyond its metal content, but the buyer should understand the premium and the possible resale market. Compare identical items from another dealer where possible.
Unit size changes how you can sell later. Small units may support a partial exit; a larger bar can carry a different premium. Ask for the current price and an indicative bid for each structure. A bid today is not a promise about the future; it is a way to understand the immediate purchase-to-sale gap under the stated conditions.
If availability changes after the transfer begins, ask for a revised order and custodian approval before accepting a substitute. Reconcile the completed order against the custodian statement after vault receipt.

Custodian and depository
Separate firms administer the account and hold the metal in the vault. Ask
Goldco to identify the organizations for your account, the available storage type and each party's contract. The company's statement that it works with major custodians does not establish a complete list of choices for every buyer.
Obtain the account opening, recurring and transaction charges plus the vault schedule. Ask whether storage is segregated or commingled, how holdings are identified and what would be delivered or sold. A label should be explained by the contract, including how the assets are recorded to the account.
Insurance also needs a written description. Ask which risks are covered, any exclusions, the valuation basis and who handles a claim. Confirm coverage during transport, the point at which the vault acknowledges receipt and the process for correcting a statement that differs from the order.
The value on a statement may differ from the dealer's purchase price or a current resale bid. Ask how the custodian determines and updates the value. A reporting figure helps monitor the account but is not a guaranteed offer to purchase the assets. When you intend to sell, request a written item-specific bid.
Fees and the metal quote
Goldco says IRA fees are often flat rather than percentage-based; the amount depends on the applicable provider schedule. Request the current opening, annual, storage, transaction and closing charges in writing. Ask whether a minimum applies and how the fee schedule can change.
Goldco’s product quote must be assessed alongside those account expenses. Request the price for each item, the total metal weight and the quote's expiration time. If the representative discusses a spot price, ask for the actual purchase price and a current bid for the same item where available. The difference illustrates current round-trip economics, not a guaranteed future spread.
Compare these components together:
- Product names, quantities, conditions and total dealer price.
- Account opening, recurring administration and per-transaction fees.
- Vault ownership arrangement, charges and coverage.
- Payment, delivery, cancellation and transfer conditions.
- The terms and deductions for a future sale.
If a fee reimbursement is offered, ask which charges qualify, how it is paid and what applies after the offer ends. An account waiver does not necessarily change the metal price. Request the same product quote with and without the promotion so the benefit and the underlying purchase are visible separately.
Free-metal offers and product selection
Goldco has advertised a free-silver promotion for qualifying orders. In October 2026, the offer applied to qualifying purchase amounts and premium coins. Those conditions do not establish the current offer. Ask for the current written conditions, eligible products, valuation and timing before counting the benefit.
A bonus should not decide the product by itself. If the offer requires a premium coin, request a second quote for a common bullion product and compare the total metal received, purchase price and current resale indication. The value assigned to promotional silver may not equal the cash amount a buyer would pay for it later.
Ask whether the offer affects your ability to cancel, change the order or sell the promotional item. Confirm who owns the silver, where it will be held and whether any account or storage charge applies. The relevant comparison is the full transaction over your intended holding period, not the advertised value of a bonus in isolation.
A hypothetical comparison
For identical coins and equivalent storage, the cheaper purchase can lose its advantage to recurring charges over five years. The amounts are hypothetical, not
Goldco prices, and assume fixed charges and no other fees.
| Cost | First quote | Second quote |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase | $35,000 | $34,500 |
| Annual charge | $250 | $350 |
| Five-year total | $36,250 | $36,250 |
Neither total includes interest, opening fees, promotions, taxes, resale costs or changes in metal prices. The example also does not establish whether either proposal leaves the cash needed for later charges.
Use the fee calculator with your written schedules. For a value-based fee, test several balances and establish the valuation method. Where products differ, obtain matching offers or evaluate that difference independently from the total.
A buyer choosing a premium coin should compare the bid for that exact item with its purchase quote. A combined account valuation can obscure different bids for bullion and premium pieces, so ask for a separate offer for each product. A present indication is useful for assessing the immediate gap, while a future sale depends on the terms and market at that time.

Buyback and sale
Goldco describes a highest-buyback guarantee on its buying page. Ask for the current written terms, eligible items, how a competing bid is evaluated and any shipping or handling charges. A marketing guarantee does not establish an unconditional future price for every product. Ask how a competing offer must be documented and whether its amount is compared before or after shipment and other deductions. The answer matters when an apparently stronger bid may leave lower proceeds after the costs of completing the sale.
Request an item-specific bid, its expiration and inspection conditions. Seek a competing net bid for identical items after the stated deductions. Ask what happens if the item is held at a depository, who pays transport and when payment is made.
For retirement holdings, obtain the account provider’s authorization process and outside-buyer rules. An internal sale is separate from removing proceeds or metal. The IRS explains withdrawal treatment in its distribution FAQ. Discuss the timing and method with your custodian and tax adviser.
Comparing a premium-coin proposal
Ask the representative to identify each coin's metal weight, price and condition separately. If the proposed order qualifies for promotional silver, request the same information for the promotional item and the terms that determine ownership. The total advertised benefit is only one component of the transaction: the purchase price, account fees and later sale bid determine the rest.
A common bullion quote provides a useful reference even if you ultimately prefer a premium product. Ask whether the same custodian and depository can accept both alternatives and whether the promotion applies to either. If the products differ, do not compare only the total dollars invested; compare the amount and type of metal received, then consider any feature beyond metal content that you actually value.
When you seek a resale indication, specify the exact item and condition. Ask whether a quote is subject to inspection and how long it remains valid. A bonus item can have its own handling and sale costs. Keep the offer conditions with the order so you can understand what was included without assuming that an advertised retail value is the amount you will receive later.
Documents to review before signing
Read the product order, dealer terms, custodian application, fee schedule and depository agreement together. Confirm each product, the price-lock point, payment instructions and any market-loss or cancellation provision. Ask for a missing schedule before accepting the proposal.
Keep the written promotion conditions and the final order. If the transfer is delayed or an item is substituted, request a revised confirmation and custodian approval. Compare the first statement with the order, and ask how the holding is valued. These records will also help you request an accurate future bid.
If the company cannot provide a current minimum or fee for the proposed account, treat the comparison as incomplete. A historical number or another custodian's schedule is not a substitute for the agreement you would sign. Take the time needed to understand which party charges each fee and how it may change.

Frequently asked questions
Does
Goldco offer a precious-metals IRA?
Yes.
Goldco describes the process on its gold IRA page. Ask it to identify the custodian and depository for your proposal, confirm the exact products and provide current account charges before transferring retirement funds. Ask how the account pays recurring custody and storage charges.
What is the current minimum purchase?
Goldco has described different thresholds for IRA and direct purchases. Ask for the current requirement for your route and whether it applies to the first order, later orders or the account balance. Obtain the answer alongside your itemized quote. Confirm whether the account provider has a separate requirement.
Is free silver available on every purchase?
No. The company's historical offer applied to qualifying orders and particular products. Obtain the current offer conditions and valuation, then compare the whole order with standard bullion. A bonus does not guarantee investment performance. Check who owns the promotional item and where it is stored.
What does the buyback guarantee mean for a future sale price?
A guarantee described in marketing does not by itself establish an unconditional future price. Request the present written terms and an item-specific bid, including any deductions. For retirement assets, establish the account’s sale-approval and settlement procedure. Confirm the vault release and any separate transaction charge.
