What to compare before buying
For another custodian discussion, compare
Advantage Gold.
Genesis describes IRA assistance and identifies
Delaware Depository for storage. Before moving funds, ask it to name the custodian, provide the full fee schedule and quote the exact products. Those account-specific terms determine whether the proposal suits your intended holding.
Who
Genesis suits
A retirement saver who wants to discuss physical metals and storage can consider
Genesis alongside another dealer. The
Genesis IRA page names four metals and describes both storage types at
Delaware Depository. Confirm the current choices for your account and obtain each schedule before selecting a vault arrangement.
This is a useful discussion for a long-term IRA holder who values the form in which the metal will eventually be received. A saver who expects only a cash sale may judge the two arrangements differently from a collector-minded holder who wants a particular purchased item back. Neither preference establishes the best account without comparing its cost and contract.
A saver who needs a complete cost comparison should first obtain the custodian's name and written charges. Ask
Genesis to identify the custodian, minimum and fee schedule that apply to your account. Request them for the proposed account, and leave the comparison open until the responsible party supplies them.
What
Genesis offers
Genesis describes assistance with gold IRA setup and retirement funding on its site. The dealer, custodian and depository have different jobs: the dealer supplies the metal, the custodian administers the IRA and the vault stores the assets. Ask which company will perform each role and which agreement governs it.
The company's IRA explanation discusses a range of eligible metals and storage at
Delaware Depository. Confirm the product, location and storage type available to your custodian. A provider's general description does not guarantee that every combination is offered for your account.
Before requesting a transfer, identify the amount you want to allocate and whether your existing plan permits the movement. Your employer’s plan may limit access while you still work there. Check the plan’s partial-transfer rules, required investment sales and outgoing charge.
A dealer can help with paperwork but cannot determine your complete retirement allocation from the purchase alone. The metal can decline in price and produces no income. Assess the allocation against your full savings and expected needs; obtain personal advice if necessary.
Funding the account
The method differs when a plan sends funds directly, IRA trustees transfer them, or a distribution is paid to you. The IRS’s rollover guidance describes the different procedures. Coordinate payment directions with both the original institution and the new account provider.
Do not assume every transfer is automatically tax-free. The tax result depends on the account types, method and individual facts. Ask the custodian and a qualified tax adviser about the proposed movement, particularly if money will be paid to you or converted between account types. A company's general description cannot replace that account-specific answer.
Ask whether the custodian requires a cash balance for charges. If part of the transfer must remain in cash, it is not available for the initial metal purchase. Confirm how fees are collected, whether you can replenish the reserve and what happens if it runs low. Include any sending-plan exit fee in the comparison.
If
Genesis or the custodian has an order minimum, request the current requirement in writing. Ask whether it applies to the first metal purchase, every later order or the account balance. A minimum is a provider condition, not a reason to move more retirement money than you have independently decided to allocate.
For a payment made to you, the IRS describes a generally applicable sixty-day rollover period. Withholding can mean the amount you receive is smaller than the distribution, and rolling over the full amount may require replacing the withheld cash from other funds. A direct plan payment or trustee transfer avoids that particular handling problem. Ask the sending institution to name the method on its instruction rather than using “rollover” as a catch-all.
The IRS also distinguishes IRA-to-IRA rollovers from direct trustee transfers for its one-per-year restriction. Previous account movements can therefore matter if you are considering receiving the funds yourself. Have the institutions and your adviser identify the permitted route before requesting a check. This is a procedural decision to settle before selecting coins, not a reason to rush a metals order.
Selecting metals for the IRA
Genesis discusses gold, silver, platinum and palladium on its IRA page. Publication 590-B explains IRA restrictions on collectibles and exceptions for eligible metals. Obtain custodian approval of the particular item, weight and form.
Request a line-item proposal showing each coin or bar, quantity, condition and price. If the first proposal contains specialty products, request a standard bullion alternative and ask why its price differs. Equal metal content can still carry different premiums and resale markets.
Compare an identical item from another dealer at roughly the same time. Record the quote's expiry and whether the payment method or shipment changes the total. A spot price is a reference for the underlying metal; it is not the final purchase price of a particular coin or bar.
Consider how you may sell the holding. Small units can support a partial sale; premiums on a larger bar may differ. Ask for an indicative bid for the same items where available and the transaction charges for a sale. A current offer is not a promise about future demand or price.

Segregated and non-segregated storage
Genesis identifies
Delaware Depository and states that either segregated or non-segregated storage provides full titled ownership. That is the company’s description of the available arrangements; the executed custodian and vault agreements determine how ownership is recorded and an instruction is carried out. Titled ownership alone does not answer whether a particular coin must be returned.
Compare the two arrangements against the holding you want. Segregated storage generally separates identified items, while non-segregated storage generally records an entitlement to equivalent assets. Ask whether your order is tracked by manufacturer, product and quantity or by individual identifiers. If receiving the specific purchased item matters, choose only an arrangement whose agreement confirms that right. Someone content to receive an equivalent eligible product may place more weight on its continuing cost.
Obtain one comparison covering the proposed record, release rights and charges. The schedule should identify whether each charge is fixed or based on value, whether a minimum applies across the account or to individual metals, and whether insurance is included. Ask how a later change of storage type or depository would be authorized and billed. Do not presume an alternative vault is available to your custodian simply because another dealer offers it.
Read the insurance description for covered risks, exclusions and valuation. Identify who bears the transport risk and how the custodian learns that a deposit has been accepted. Then compare the purchase order with the first asset statement, including the product names and quantities. Establish whether the custodian or depository corrects a discrepancy and retain the response with the account records.
Keep reporting value separate from liquidation value. The custodian’s valuation method and update frequency can affect a statement and a percentage-based fee, but they do not set a buyer’s bid. A statement should help reconcile the account; a sale requires its own current item-specific offer. This distinction is especially relevant when the original purchase included a premium for a particular product.
Before selecting either option, obtain a sample ownership record, match its release language to your preference and compare the applicable schedule. This completes the storage decision without assuming that a label establishes serial-number tracking, personal inspection or a particular insurance limit. The arrangement earns any extra cost through the rights it actually gives you, rather than through the word “segregated” alone.
Product and account costs
Ask
Genesis for an itemized purchase quote and the named custodian for its current schedule. The account may carry opening, annual administration, storage and transaction charges. Confirm which party bills each fee, whether it is flat or value-based and how it can change. A missing published fee should remain an open question, not be treated as zero.
Ask the dealer when the product price locks and whether payment, delivery or cancellation charges apply. Compare the same coin or bar with a competing offer, including any custodian and vault fees. A lower initial price can be outweighed by recurring charges, while a lower annual fee does not necessarily compensate for a higher product premium.
Put these items on the comparison:
- Product name, quantity, weight, condition and total price.
- Custodian, account-opening, annual and transaction charges.
- Depository, storage type, insurance and recurring fee.
- Payment, shipment, cancellation and transfer terms.
- Sale procedure, offer conditions and any deductions.
If a fee waiver or other promotion is offered, ask for its written duration, eligible products and account conditions. Compare the total after the waiver ends as well as the first year. A benefit can be useful without making a different product or a larger allocation appropriate for your situation.
A hypothetical comparison
Suppose two providers offer the same coins for $22,000 and $21,500. The first account costs an illustrative $250 per year and the second costs $350. These are invented figures, not
Genesis quotes. Assume equivalent storage and fixed charges for five years.
| Cost category | Dealer A | Dealer B |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase | $22,000 | $21,500 |
| Annual fee | $250 | $350 |
| Five-year total | $23,250 | $23,250 |
The accounts finish level because Dealer B’s extra annual charge uses up its initial purchase saving. Setup fees, interest on cash, taxes, sale costs and movements in metal prices are excluded.
Use the fee calculator with your actual documents. If the accounts have equal starting cash, the lower purchase leaves $500 more cash initially; this example does not model interest on that balance. If the storage services or products differ, request matching proposals or treat the difference as a separate decision rather than a pure price comparison.
Planning retirement withdrawals
Genesis says it helps customers navigate liquidations and required minimum distributions. That service is relevant to a retiree who will need the account to produce payments, but the IRA administrator and tax adviser must determine the actual requirement. Ask who calculates it, who issues the instruction and when a sale or metal delivery must begin.
Required minimum distributions cannot be rolled over under the IRS’s rollover rules. If you are moving an account during a year when a required withdrawal applies, have both institutions explain how it will be handled. Moving the remaining eligible funds and satisfying the withdrawal are separate tasks. A general offer to help with a rollover should not obscure that distinction.
A cash withdrawal may require selling part of the holding first. Discuss the size of the units when planning that need: selling a whole bar may release more value than you wanted, while smaller units may carry a different purchase premium. Keep enough flexibility for the payments you expect without assuming a favorable future metal price.
If you prefer a distribution of metal, obtain the administrator’s instructions for valuation, reporting and delivery. The tax consequences depend on your account and circumstances; receiving coins does not remove the need to account for a withdrawal. Add any release, packaging and insured transport costs to that decision. Compare the practical result with selling inside the account and then withdrawing cash.
A required payment deadline makes settlement timing consequential. Work backward from when the account must complete the withdrawal, allowing for authorization, a firm bid or delivery instruction, and the vault’s processing. Confirm the schedule with the custodian rather than assuming the dealer’s help establishes a guaranteed completion date. Keep the approved instruction so each party knows which transaction to execute.

Selling and distributions
Ask
Genesis for the current buyback policy before relying on a future sale route. Confirm whether it will make an offer for your exact items, how a bid is calculated, how long it remains valid and what shipment or inspection costs apply. A process for requesting a bid is not a guaranteed resale price.
Seek a competing net bid for those products in the same condition. Obtain the account provider’s rules for outside buyers, release of assets and related charges. A higher headline bid can be reduced by shipment, insurance or transaction charges.
An internal sale leaves proceeds in the account unless you separately withdraw them. The IRS explains potential tax treatment in its distribution FAQ. Before withdrawing, review your proposed timing and method with the account provider and tax adviser.
Reviewing the written proposal
Examine the product order alongside the account application, vault contract and fee documents. The purchase document should name the items and cost; the account papers should identify the administering and storage firms. Ask for a missing schedule before committing funds. If a representative describes a benefit, request the current conditions in writing.
Establish the binding-price point and the consequence of late funding by the original plan. Ask whether a product substitution requires your approval, how cancellation is handled and whether a market-loss or handling charge can apply. A change in product may also need fresh custodian acceptance.
Keep the final order, payment record and account statement. Check the product names and quantities, and ask how the statement value is calculated. When you later request a sale, these documents help the buyer and custodian identify the exact items. Resolve discrepancies promptly with the responsible party.
Alternatives to
Genesis Gold Group
Advantage Gold is another dealer to compare if you value a discussion of custodians. Its FAQ identifies recommended custodians. Ask what is currently available and obtain the same products and storage schedules from both firms.
A direct buyer can check a matching catalog product at
APMEX, using identical payment and delivery terms. For retirement assets, obtain the account and storage fee documents as well.
Frequently asked questions
Does
Genesis Gold Group offer IRA assistance?
Yes. The company describes IRA setup and retirement funding on its site. Ask it to identify the custodian, depository and current charges for your proposed account, and confirm the sending plan permits the intended movement. Ask how account fees are collected and whether a reserve is required.
What is the current minimum?
Request
Genesis’s current account and metal-purchase minimums. Clarify whether each threshold applies to funds transferred, the initial trade or later orders, and retain that explanation with the proposal. Ask whether uninvested cash held in the IRA counts toward the requirement, especially if the custodian requires a reserve for fees.
What storage choices does
Genesis describe?
Its IRA page describes segregated and non-segregated storage at
Delaware Depository. Confirm the current availability, ownership records, insurance and fee for each choice through the custodian and vault before selecting an arrangement. Ask who records the products and who supplies the annual statement.
What should I confirm about future buyback terms?
Obtain the current buyback policy, any bid formula and the deductions that apply to your products. Confirm when an item-specific offer expires and who authorizes release from the vault. For an IRA sale, ask whether your custodian accepts a competing buyer and how sale proceeds are credited before any separate withdrawal.
