Hard Assets Alliance review: GBI Direct

GBI Direct, founded as Hard Assets Alliance, fits an investor who intends to keep physical bullion off-site and make purchases or sales while it remains vaulted. JM Bullion is the more relevant comparison for someone whose goal is prompt personal possession of an individual coin. A small holding also needs enough value to justify the chosen storage minimum.

Gold IRA Master is part of National Gold Group, one of the companies compared on this site.

What to compare before buying

A vaulted position and a delivered coin solve different holding needs. Compare JM Bullion using the item you would actually receive at home, including its subsequent safeguarding. With GBI Direct, the relevant commitment extends beyond buying metal to maintaining the storage arrangement and using the account’s sale or release procedures.

Who GBI Direct suits

An investor building a vaulted physical-metal holding can use GBI Direct to purchase or sell without planning a home shipment after every transaction. Its accounts page describes personal and retirement-account options. A buyer should understand the product, vault location, ownership record, storage charge and eventual withdrawal process before deciding that the platform fits.

A buyer who wants a coin delivered immediately may prefer a direct dealer. GBI Direct describes shipping stored metals on request, but vault withdrawal and delivery are separate steps with their own conditions. Ask for the current handling, shipment and insurance costs for the exact item. Compare that total with a direct dealer's delivered price rather than comparing only the metal price.

An IRA buyer needs a separate custodian. GBI Direct's support information identifies an integrated custodian for the IRA arrangement and notes that some older accounts may use another. Ask which custodian would administer a new account, which vault it accepts and how the account and platform statements reconcile. A platform account alone is not an IRA.

Hard Assets Alliance and GBI Direct

The company's history says GBI Direct was founded as Hard Assets Alliance. The user agreement uses the legal name Hard Assets Alliance, LLC doing business as GBI Direct and describes transactions through Gold Bullion International, LLC. The trade name, contracting entity and transaction provider are related roles, not interchangeable descriptions of the IRA custodian or vault operator.

Ask for the current user agreement and identify the parties responsible for the account, trade execution, custody and storage. The company describes a marketplace where multiple dealers can fill orders. That is a platform description, not a promise that every order will receive the best possible price. Review the executable quote and terms before submitting the transaction.

Older Hard Assets Alliance references may use different branding or account arrangements. If you already hold an account, ask whether its custodian or terms differ from those offered to new customers. Do not assume a current support article automatically changes an existing contract. Obtain the account-specific documents and any amendment notices.

Choosing an account and product

GBI Direct describes several account types, including precious-metals IRAs, on its accounts page. It also describes a recurring-purchase feature. Ask which account can use that feature, how funding and purchase instructions work, and whether each transaction or vault has a minimum. Establish the amount and frequency you intend to fund before using an automatic instruction.

For an IRA, confirm the exact coin or bar with the custodian. Publication 590-B explains the IRA rules for collectibles and eligible bullion. A listing alone does not establish acceptance by your custodian.

Consider the unit size and eventual exit. Coins in smaller units may make a partial exit possible; a larger bar can be priced with a different premium. Ask what products the platform can sell or ship, whether the depository holds your chosen form and how a later transaction is authorized. A current bid does not guarantee future demand or price.

Funding an IRA

GBI Direct's support information identifies Equity Trust for its integrated IRA arrangement and describes legacy accounts separately. Confirm the current custodian for your proposal and request its opening, annual, transaction and closing charges. The custodian's schedule is separate from platform and vault charges.

An existing retirement plan must permit the proposed transfer or distribution. Check whether the old account permits a partial movement, requires asset sales or charges an outgoing fee. The IRS explains the differences between a plan’s direct rollover, a transfer from one IRA trustee to another, and a distribution received personally in its rollover guidance. Coordinate the transfer directions with each institution before acting.

Ask whether the account needs cash for ongoing charges and how that reserve is held. If a balance must remain uninvested, the amount transferred differs from the amount available to buy metal. Confirm whether the custodian bills you separately, deducts cash or may sell assets if the balance is insufficient.

A provider minimum is not an allocation recommendation. GBI Direct says it sets no IRA contribution minimum, while Equity Trust can impose its own requirement. Its minimum FAQ separates those requirements from the IRS’s annual contribution limits. Decide how much physical metal fits your wider retirement plan independently of a minimum or automatic-purchase feature.

For a new integrated IRA, the support instructions specify Equity Trust and say the customer cannot choose another custodian within that integrated arrangement. They separately explain continued support for some accounts opened before July 2020 with The Entrust Group. That is a meaningful boundary for an existing account holder: do not assume the custodian on a new-account screen replaces the institution administering an older holding. Establish which arrangement applies before comparing the institution’s fees or directing a transfer. A trade name, an account interface and an IRA administrator identify different parts of the service.

Vaults and ownership records

The company's vault support page identifies operators and locations. Confirm the available facility for the chosen product and account, and ask how your holdings are recorded. A vault location can affect storage, delivery and tax treatment, so compare the same location when evaluating prices.

Ask whether the selected storage is allocated, segregated or reserved and what each term means in the contract. Find out whether individual products are identified, what appears on the statement and what would be released on a withdrawal. The operational rights and fee schedule are more useful than a marketing label alone.

Obtain the insurance terms, including how losses are valued and what is excluded. Ask who covers transport to or from the vault and how a loss claim is handled. Compare the platform record, vault statement and IRA custodian statement where applicable. If product quantities or ownership details differ, resolve the discrepancy with the responsible party in writing.

Before selecting a vault, ask whether you can change locations later and what transfer, handling, insurance or tax charges could arise. A lower annual rate at one location may not be the best fit if you expect to take delivery elsewhere. Obtain a current estimate for the whole route rather than assuming storage and shipping are interchangeable.

GBI Direct’s reserved option is described for Brink’s Salt Lake City: wrapped, labeled metals in isolated space, accompanied by signed and verified warehouse certificates. That description gives a buyer a specific arrangement to evaluate, but it should not be generalized to every facility in the network. Match the certificate’s metal and quantity with the account record. If reserve space is the feature you value, compare that option with the default arrangement before using either fee estimate in a decision.

Pricing and recurring charges

GBI Direct’s default storage schedule uses account-value tiers, with rates varying by metal category. A separate reserved-storage schedule has a different minimum basis. Request the applicable rate, billing basis and minimum for each metal and vault; also establish whether the IRA custodian charges an annual fee.

For a modest position, the applicable minimum may determine the bill rather than the percentage rate. Use the balance you intend to maintain and identify the relevant schedule before comparing one account’s estimate with another.

The product quote is a separate cost. The pricing page displays indicative prices; confirm the executable account quote before committing. Compare the same metal, product, currency, quantity and vault location. Include any transaction fee, tax and bank or currency conversion cost in the total.

Request these details together:

  • The executable price and exact product, quantity and location.
  • Storage rate, minimum, billing period and insurance terms.
  • IRA custodian opening, annual and transaction charges where applicable.
  • Funding, delivery, handling and currency conversion charges.
  • Sale settlement timing and the procedure for physical withdrawal.

The default schedule accrues fees each day using the metals’ resale value and bills quarterly from available account cash. It describes notification and a grace period to add funds if cash is insufficient. This makes the resale valuation and billing period relevant to checking a statement: the original purchase invoice is not the daily storage base. A rise or fall in the holding’s valuation can change a percentage-based charge even when you neither buy nor sell.

The default minimum is assessed per account for assets outside MetalStream. Reserved storage instead states a minimum for each metal type at each vault location. Splitting a holding among metals or locations therefore raises a different minimum-fee question under the reserved arrangement. Obtain an estimate for the actual split you intend to maintain rather than applying one account-level minimum across a set of separately billed positions.

A hypothetical vault comparison

Suppose a buyer places $20,000 in vaulted metal. Account A has a hypothetical fixed storage cost of $100 per year; Account B has a $150 annual minimum. These are invented inputs, not GBI Direct prices. Assume the purchase price is identical, charges do not change and neither account has other fees for four years.

Hypothetical four-year vault costs
CostAccount AAccount B
Metal purchase$20,000$20,000
Annual storage$100$150
Four-year total$20,400$20,600

The larger annual minimum leaves Account B $200 more expensive across the four assumed years. The illustration excludes trading spreads, custodian fees, taxes, delivery, currency conversion and changes in metal value. These inputs do not forecast investment performance. For a value-based charge, apply the actual formula to several balances.

An IRA custodian's charges must be added separately. The fee calculator can help compare written schedules, but the result is incomplete when a minimum or transaction charge is unknown. Check whether the two vault services provide equivalent ownership records and withdrawal rights before treating the lower total as decisive.

Selling or taking delivery

GBI Direct describes selling from the account through a sell function. Its support page explains submitting a sell request to lock the live account bid. Ask for the current executable bid, when it locks and what charges apply. An indicative price is not a guaranteed future offer.

The company’s delivery instructions address a different request from selling. Ask which products can be shipped, the vault's release process, the carrier, insurance and any handling or tax charges. If the account holds an IRA asset, the custodian must explain whether and how a distribution can be made. A shipment to you personally may have tax consequences.

The IRS distribution FAQ explains general withdrawal treatment. Discuss the proposed withdrawal with the account provider and your tax adviser first. Confirm whether a sale's proceeds remain in the IRA or are being withdrawn; those are separate decisions.

Account access and governing terms

GBI Direct’s user agreement requires a registered account to buy, sell or store metal. It assigns the account holder responsibility for access credentials and transactions conducted through the account. An individual login cannot be shared among several people; the agreement treats joint or entity accounts separately. A household or business planning more than one authorized participant should establish the appropriate registration and authority before funding, rather than passing around one individual password.

The agreement also distinguishes its general terms from additional terms attached to particular services. It says the additional terms control a conflict unless they expressly provide otherwise. For the buyer, that means a general account description should not be used to override the document governing a selected storage or transaction service. Identify the applicable service terms when comparing an executable order with a reserved-storage election or delivery request.

Continued website use is described as acceptance of amendments posted with a revised effective date. The agreement’s effective date and the documents governing an existing account should therefore be retained with the purchase record. A rebrand alone does not establish what changed in an individual contract. If a notice affects how an instruction can be given, resolve that practical question with the account provider before attempting a trade or transfer.

When the vaulted account is the better fit

GBI Direct is most useful when keeping bullion off-site and transacting within that arrangement serves the investor’s plan. It is less compelling for a modest holding whose recurring minimum absorbs too much of the intended budget, or for a buyer who wants an individual coin delivered immediately. Use the proposed storage basis and actual release route to decide, rather than treating access to multiple dealers as proof of a lower total.

An existing Hard Assets Alliance customer has one additional task: establish whether the integrated or legacy custodian arrangement governs the account. That determines which institution’s schedule belongs in the comparison. Recurring purchases should follow the allocation already chosen, with funding and stop instructions understood before they are activated.

Alternatives to GBI Direct

BullionVault is another platform to compare if you intend to hold and trade vaulted bullion. Compare the product format, execution process, storage minimum and physical withdrawal conditions. Its professional-format bars and order board may suit a different buyer from a platform offering particular coins.

JM Bullion is relevant when you want to compare direct delivery of a specific coin. Use the identical product, funding method and destination; include shipment and personal safeguarding costs. A retirement-account comparison also needs the custodian and vault fee documents.

How we checked this. Company history and the user agreement effective January 26, 2026 support the GBI Direct/Hard Assets Alliance identity and separate transaction roles. November 5 actual support text supplements October 24 primary excerpts for integrated/legacy custodians, IRA minimums, default/reserved billing, facilities and selling. The original delivery excerpt and BullionVault/JM primary pages support the limited alternatives. No current numerical fee quote is adopted; the four-year table is hypothetical.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hard Assets Alliance now GBI Direct?

Yes. The company's history says GBI Direct was founded as Hard Assets Alliance. Its user agreement identifies Hard Assets Alliance doing business as GBI Direct; ask for the documents governing your own account, especially if it was opened under the older name.

Is GBI Direct the IRA custodian?

No. The integrated arrangement identifies a separate custodian in the company's support information. Confirm which custodian would administer your account and obtain its current fee schedule. Older accounts may have different arrangements. Ask which vault and account charges apply to the proposed arrangement.

Can I take delivery of stored metal?

Yes. The company describes shipment of eligible stored metal on request. Establish the product that can be released, handling and transport charges, insurance and destination taxes before choosing delivery. For an IRA holding, the custodian must separately authorize any distribution and explain the account procedure; obtain tax advice for your circumstances.

What does storage cost?

Storage depends on the metal, account value and chosen arrangement. The default option uses resale-value accrual with quarterly billing and an account-level minimum outside MetalStream. Reserved storage has a separate minimum by metal and vault. Request the schedule for your intended holding, then add the IRA custodian’s distinct charges if applicable.
