Who
APMEX and
National Gold Group suit
APMEX suits the buyer whose first decision is the bullion product itself. The coin or bar's specifications provide a concrete starting point for comparing sellers.
National Gold Group's IRA assistance instead addresses the saver who needs to establish an account arrangement before completing a purchase.
National Gold Group says it discloses its markup over a wholesale reference in its pricing policy. That is useful when you want a representative to explain the proposed amount. The explanation still needs an actual order: a pricing method alone cannot prove that the resulting offer beats an
APMEX quote.
The
APMEX review and
National Gold Group review cover each company separately. For this comparison, judge whether you need help choosing and funding the account or primarily need to price an identified bullion item. Both buyers still need to understand the final contract.
The dealer and custodian have different jobs
A seller offers the metal and its price. Account administration belongs to the IRA custodian; the vault holds the property under a separate custody agreement. Request
National Gold Group’s proposed account institution and vault, and confirm whether your existing self-directed account can handle the order. A facility named in general marketing still needs to be available under the proposed account agreement.
For
APMEX, ask the receiving custodian how it approves an item, receives an invoice, pays the dealer and directs delivery. The account institution must confirm compatibility for the particular order. A personal online checkout and an IRA purchase can have different instructions and destinations.
Request each institution's account agreement and fee schedule. Find out how uninvested cash is held, how purchases are authorized and how the holding appears on the statement. Direct an account-fee question to the institution imposing the fee, and a product-price question to the seller.
If the dealer's explanation conflicts with the custodian's document, ask both to resolve the discrepancy in writing. Keep the purchase confirmation and account record separately. They describe different steps, and you should be able to match the product and quantity after the transaction settles.
Compare the exact product
An online catalog can help you identify a particular coin or bar and its specifications. Ask
APMEX whether the product shown is available for the IRA process you intend to use. Request the same item and quantity from
National Gold Group, including a final purchase amount and the time for which that quotation remains valid.
If one dealer recommends a different item, ask why and whether it can quote a matched alternative. A comparison between unlike products can reflect differences in form, weight or product premium as well as dealer pricing. Record those distinctions rather than presenting the two amounts as an identical order.
Certain coins and bullion qualify under an IRS collectibles exception, subject to the relevant fineness and trustee-possession conditions. Its guidance supplies the general framework. Have the receiving custodian approve the exact product and destination before account payment; a catalog label is not a substitute for that acceptance.
Consider whether the item fits your investment objective as well. Eligibility does not guarantee an appropriate allocation, a low spread or a profit. Physical metal can fall in value, and a dealer may recommend products with different premiums or resale conditions. Ask for the total purchase and same-time repurchase prices before deciding.
A bullion comparison also needs the actual metal weight, not simply the face value or package count. A fractional coin and a larger coin can have different premiums per unit of metal. If your eventual plan is to sell in smaller portions, the flexibility of smaller pieces may justify part of that difference; if you intend one long-term holding, the extra premium needs another reason.
APMEX provides introductory bullion education for buyers learning the categories. Education can help you frame the product decision, but the final specification and price belong in the order. A product that is easier to understand and compare may be a better fit than a specialty item whose extra value depends on a collector market you do not intend to participate in.
How to compare the price
Ask both companies for the same quantity, payment conditions and timing.
National Gold Group describes a wholesale benchmark plus an identified markup. Ask for the actual reference and amount on the proposed order, including any other charge. That description cannot establish whether today’s
APMEX total is higher or lower.
For
APMEX, check the final order or invoice amount for the chosen payment method and any applicable delivery or transaction charges. A displayed amount can change before an order is accepted. Confirm the price at the point the order becomes binding, and ask what happens if the IRA funding process takes longer than the quote remains valid.
Request a bid for an immediate resale of the identified items. The CFTC/FINRA bulletin explains why the amount a dealer would pay you can differ from what you pay it. Enter the two offers in the spread checker to assess that transaction gap.
Hypothetical order amounts:
| Hypothetical item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Purchase price | $11,500 |
| Repurchase bid | $10,350 |
| Quotation gap before other costs | $1,150 |
These are not quotes from either dealer. Ask whether each offer is binding, its expiration and any conditions for inspection, shipment or payment.
Hypothetical Order and Bid
Account fees and storage costs
The dealer's price is only one part of an IRA transaction. Obtain the custodian's setup, annual administration, purchase, sale and distribution schedule, plus the vault's storage terms. Identify which institution charges each amount and whether it can change. A low purchase quote does not establish the account's recurring cost.
Ask whether storage is segregated and how specific items are recorded. The agreement should explain what property is returned if you request an in-kind distribution. If equivalent products are pooled, ask how the facility defines equivalence and what appears on the account statement. An in-kind distribution needs a clear return obligation, particularly if you care about receiving the original items.
Compare the same expected holding period while keeping assumptions explicit. The fee calculator can illustrate the figures you enter; it cannot guarantee future charges or gold prices. If one proposal omits a schedule, mark that cost unknown until the responsible institution provides it.
Review any promotion in writing. Ask which fee is covered, who funds the benefit, how the account qualifies and when it ends. A waived account charge can coexist with a different product price or spread. An online checkout promotion may also have conditions that differ from the IRA arrangement.
How the order is funded
For a workplace plan, ask the administrator whether your intended amount is eligible to move. If the funds are already in an IRA, coordinate the sending and receiving institutions' instructions. Plan rollovers, trustee transfers and payments to you each use their own procedure. The appropriate route depends on the sending and receiving accounts.
Ask who gives the payment instruction and which payee should appear on any check. If existing assets must be sold first, establish settlement timing and costs. Confirm the amount that reaches the receiving account before instructing it to purchase metal. The transfer, product quote and final order are separate events.
A quote may expire while funding is underway. Ask both dealers how an updated price is obtained and whether any promotion or product availability can change. A qualified tax professional can assess questions about account types or a distribution paid personally; a dealer's general process cannot determine your individual tax result.

Selling the metal later
National Gold Group offers to repurchase metals bought through it at current market rates.
APMEX also describes selling metals to the company. Establish item acceptance and the binding bid before arranging either sale.
Ask whether the IRA custodian can sell to another buyer, whether the depository can transfer metal directly or must ship it, and which party pays release, insurance and shipping charges. A clear release instruction matters as much as the dealer’s willingness to make a bid. A buyback process is an exit route, no promise of a specific future price or profit.
Confirm where proceeds go after a sale. If the cash remains in the IRA, ask how the custodian records and holds it. If you want cash or metal personally, request the valuation, reporting and charges for a distribution and seek individualized tax advice. These are separate instructions, even when they are discussed in one conversation.
Personal purchase is a separate choice
Both a representative-led dealer and an online bullion seller may offer personal purchases. Ask about the exact payment and shipment terms, the insured party, signature requirements and what happens if a parcel is lost or damaged. Confirm the current conditions for the specific order rather than relying on an old shipping promotion.
Personal ownership gives you custody and security responsibilities that differ from an IRA. You may consider a safe or independent storage, but the property is not automatically an IRA asset because it is intended for retirement. The cash vs IRA guide explains the distinction and why a distribution from an IRA is a separate decision.
Check the order before it becomes binding
An online product listing and an assisted proposal can reach the same point: a final order with specific terms. Before approval, verify the full product name, quantity, account owner and destination. Ask which price applies if the market moves before payment and whether the quote is locked by your authorization, the custodian's payment or another event. A screen showing a price without those conditions is not necessarily the final transaction.
Ask how the dealer confirms delivery to the depository and when the custodian will update the account statement. If the vault reports a different item or quantity, identify the person responsible for investigating it. Retain the order confirmation, custodian instruction and statement together; each record supports a different stage of the purchase.
For a personal order, check the shipment method and the agreement's loss and damage procedure. For an IRA, do not substitute your own address for the approved destination. If you are unsure which process is being used, pause and ask the custodian to confirm ownership and shipment in writing. A corrected order can be reviewed before the account sends funds. Ask whether an item substitution is permitted and who must approve it if the original product becomes unavailable. The dealer should identify any revised price and product details, while the custodian should confirm that the replacement can be held in the account. Keep the new confirmation rather than assuming the earlier quotation still describes the transaction. If the item changes, obtain a fresh contemporaneous repurchase bid as well. That helps you understand the transaction gap for the actual product rather than the one originally considered.
Choose the product and account together
Use
APMEX when selecting the exact bullion item is the main task, and use
National Gold Group's account assistance when setting up the IRA is the main task. An existing self-directed account can change the practical work required, but it does not automatically accept every dealer or product.
APMEX's October 2026 IRA process referred to preferred custodians and included an ordering step involving
Equity Trust while funds were pending. That historical route is relevant to an investor who already has a suitable account; current acceptance still comes from the institution handling the proposed transaction. Do not transfer an account solely because another seller describes a familiar custodian.
For a new account,
National Gold Group's role is helping coordinate the purchase and explain its pricing. The account's legal terms remain those of the custodian and storage provider. The better proposal is the one that meets your ownership objective with an acceptable product, complete costs and a workable exit, rather than the one that presents the simplest headline.
Frequently asked questions
Which company has the lower price?
A current comparison requires prices for the same item and conditions. Request both written offers close together, including payment and delivery charges. Ask for a same-time buyback bid as well, because the initial purchase price does not show the entire transaction gap.
Can I buy IRA metal through
APMEX?
APMEX offered an IRA ordering route with preferred custodians in October 2026. Confirm that the receiving custodian accepts the exact product, invoice and delivery arrangement. A catalog label is helpful for identifying an item but does not replace the account institution's approval.
Does
National Gold Group describe its markup?
In October 2026
National Gold Group described a disclosed markup over a wholesale benchmark. Obtain your order’s reference value, markup and total in writing. Compare that written amount with another current offer for the same product and quantity. The markup description alone does not establish which dealer offers the lower total.
Can an IRA purchase be delivered to my home?
For account-owned metal, follow the custodian’s approved delivery and custody process. Receiving the property personally can trigger a distribution, with consequences based on your situation. Ask the custodian about the procedure and seek qualified tax advice before directing delivery to yourself.
