National Gold Group vs Orion Metal Exchange

Orion Metal Exchange is the better fit for an existing client selling metal it supplied, particularly when insured collection of a personal holding matters. National Gold Group better suits a retirement saver who needs help arranging a metals IRA and wants the purchase markup explained before committing. This publication is part of National Gold Group; that connection does not establish a better bid or lower overall cost.

Who Orion and National Gold Group suit

Orion's buyback and delivery services are particularly relevant to a customer who will need to move physical metal when selling. Collection and account coordination can affect whether a quoted bid is practical. That makes the sale process a substantive distinction for an owner, rather than merely a convenient way to contact the company.

National Gold Group provides IRA assistance and describes a wholesale reference plus disclosed markup in its pricing approach. A saver making a new account purchase can use that explanation to assess the amount offered. It does not itself settle what Orion would charge for the same product.

The Orion Metal Exchange review and National Gold Group review discuss each firm separately. Here, start with whether you are buying into an account or planning the exit from metal you already own. The quoted transaction and the institutions carrying it out should fit that need.

Understand Orion's repurchase terms

Orion offers its clients a commission-free buyback for precious metals it sold. Orion says it confirms a liquidation price by phone and emails an invoice. For metal already in a customer’s possession, it describes arranging collection by an insured courier; for IRA or third-party storage holdings, it says it works with the custodian and depository.

Orion says it sends proceeds after receiving the metal, at the price initially guaranteed on its invoice. The absence of a buyback commission does not establish that the bid equals your original purchase price, nor does it eliminate charges from other institutions. Confirm which products and conditions apply to your proposed sale and obtain the actual invoice before relying on its price.

This process may be useful to an existing Orion customer with personally held metal who wants the company to arrange collection. A retirement account holder has an additional handoff: the custodian must authorize the sale and the depository must release the property according to the account agreement. National Gold Group also offers a repurchase service to compare under the proposed written terms. Neither company’s general description predicts a future market price.

Orion asks clients to allow 4 to 7 business days for payment processing. Its service describes proceeds being sent after the liquidated metal is received, so a phone-confirmed price is not money already available to spend. For a personal seller planning a bill or another purchase, that sequence matters as much as price. For an IRA sale, proceeds may also remain under account control until a separate distribution instruction is completed.

Compare the prices around the fee

Select an identical coin or bar and quantity where both companies can supply it. Request the complete purchase amount, the reference value used and the quote expiry. National Gold Group describes a wholesale benchmark and identified markup; request the calculation for your order. For Orion, request the same details rather than assuming a particular markup from a statement about buyback fees.

Then compare an executable same-time bid for those items. The CFTC physical-metals advisory explains the dealer spread using its selling and buying prices. Use the spread checker on your figures; future markets and bids remain uncertain.

Hypothetical transaction for the same specified holding:

Hypothetical itemAmount
Purchase price$12,000
Repurchase bid$10,800
Quotation gap before other costs$1,200

These amounts are not quotes from either provider. Confirm whether the offer is binding, when it expires and whether inspection, shipping or payment deductions apply.

When proposals use different products, ask for the reason and an equivalent quote where possible. A bar and a coin, or two coins with different characteristics, may carry different premiums and resale conditions. Show that product difference in your comparison instead of attributing the entire price difference to the dealer.

Hypothetical Quotation Gap

Purchase price$12,000
Repurchase bid$10,800
Quotation gap before other costs$1,200
Hypothetical amounts for the same specified holding, not provider quotes. The gap excludes other costs; a future bid and its conditions may differ.

Identify the IRA institutions

Different parties supply the product, administer the IRA and hold property at the contracted vault. National Gold Group describes depository options; the proposed account needs a specific facility. Obtain the proposed institution and facility names, and verify whether an existing self-directed account can handle the transaction.

Orion helps coordinate the account custodian and depository. Ask which institutions would handle your particular transaction. Request their legal names, account agreement, storage terms and current schedules. A general offer of assistance does not identify the institutions in your own agreement.

The account records should identify those responsibilities separately. Ask who approves the product, receives the invoice, authorizes payment and reports the holding. A representative can coordinate the process, but each institution's documents govern its own role and charges.

If you already have a custodian, ask it whether the proposed dealer and vault can be used together. Confirm any transfer or account-opening cost before deciding to change institutions. An existing relationship may be convenient only if the institution accepts the exact product and delivery instructions.

Confirm eligible products and custody

Specified coins and qualifying bullion can meet an IRS collectibles exception when the relevant conditions, including trustee custody, are satisfied. Its collectibles guidance sets out the general framework. Request the custodian's approval of the exact product and destination before IRA funds are used.

In October 2026 Orion offered gold, silver, platinum and palladium. Ask which precise items are currently offered and accepted by the proposed account institution. Request the same product information from National Gold Group and confirm current availability. A catalog category describes a product offering, while acceptance belongs to the account institution.

Ask how the vault records the item and whether the arrangement is segregated. The agreement should explain whether an in-kind distribution returns the original item or an equivalent product. The facility’s definition of segregated custody should address both identification and the return obligation.

Review any insurance description for the covered property, the insured party, exclusions, deductible and claims procedure. A policy for specified physical loss does not guarantee a market price. Ask the facility or custodian for the governing terms and confirm how an account discrepancy is reported.

Direct delivery or account ownership?

Orion offers insured personal delivery. National Gold Group also offers a direct-purchase route. Ask for the current delivery, payment, insurance and product terms for your own order. The agreement for the intended shipment determines those conditions.

A personal holding gives you different control and responsibilities from an IRA-owned asset. You must decide how to secure and insure the property and how you will later arrange a sale. The cash vs IRA guide explains the choice. A personal purchase is not an IRA asset merely because you intend it for retirement.

For an account purchase, use the receiving custodian's approved invoice and destination. Personal receipt of IRA metal may be a distribution with consequences depending on your circumstances. Obtain the account institution’s valuation and reporting procedure, then seek individualized tax advice before receiving property personally.

Fees beyond the buyback commission

Request the proposed custodian's setup, annual administration, transaction and distribution schedules, plus the depository's storage and release charges. An Orion statement about a buyback commission does not necessarily cover account administration, shipping or a dealer's purchase-to-sale gap. Identify the institution responsible for every amount.

National Gold Group's markup explanation is likewise separate from recurring account expenses. Ask whether an introductory benefit applies, which institution's charge it covers, the qualification and its duration. A promotion needs to identify the covered charge and its qualification terms; an omitted fee is not necessarily waived.

Use the same expected holding period in both proposals. The fee calculator can illustrate entered assumptions, but fees and metal prices can change. If the custodian has not provided a current schedule, leave that line unknown and request the document before selecting the arrangement.

Funding the IRA

The sending plan administrator must confirm whether the proposed funds are eligible to move. Obtain the receiving custodian's instructions and correct payee before the transfer begins. Plan rollovers, trustee transfers and distributions paid personally require distinct handling. The correct route follows the types of accounts involved.

Find out who coordinates paperwork and when the product quote becomes binding. A price may expire while funds are in transit. If the original account must sell assets first, ask about settlement and charges. Verify the cash received before authorizing the final product quantity.

A change in account type or a payment to you can have tax consequences dependent on your history. A qualified tax professional can review your circumstances; the dealer's general description does not determine the sending plan's eligibility or your personal result.

Personal vault storage and an IRA are different

Orion offers help establishing a direct account with an insured commercial depository for metal owned outside a retirement account. That creates an option between keeping metal at home and buying it inside an IRA. A person who wants professional storage without changing the ownership into a retirement-account arrangement has a different need from a saver moving eligible retirement money.

For the personal storage route, the relevant contract is the direct relationship with the depository. Orion says its customer service team helps locate and establish that arrangement. Evaluate access and withdrawal instructions as well as storage and insurance charges. A facility's role is safeguarding the holding; it does not guarantee what a future buyer will pay for it.

An IRA adds the custodian's administration and distribution rules. A metal holding does not become an IRA asset simply because it sits in a commercial vault or is intended for retirement. Compare National Gold Group's proposed account structure with Orion's IRA service when account ownership is your goal, and compare personal storage arrangements when it is not.

This ownership distinction should be settled before choosing a delivery destination. It affects who authorizes a sale, where the proceeds go and what taking the metal personally means. The dealer can help arrange services, but your account and storage agreements identify the parties with those responsibilities.

Agree the order and quote expiry

Keep the product and the binding price together in the final order. For a purchase, identify the item and quantity along with the account owner and destination. For a sale, retain the bid's covered items and any inspection conditions. This makes a later change visible instead of leaving the parties to rely on an earlier conversation.

A quote's expiration matters when a custodian and depository must act before settlement. Establish whether the buyer's commitment runs until receipt or only until a stated deadline. Confirm who arranges release and shipment, and what happens if institutional processing takes longer than the offer remains valid.

When the item or amount changes, obtain the revised confirmation before proceeding. The custodian must also accept a replacement intended for the IRA. After settlement, compare the resulting item or credited proceeds with the agreed transaction and direct any discrepancy to the institution responsible.

Choose for the holding you will sell

For an existing Orion client with qualifying metal, the phone-confirmed invoice and insured collection arrangement are strong reasons to start with its buyback route. Compare the executable net bid, not just the absence of a commission. A personal holder should know how the courier handoff works, while an IRA holder needs the custodian's sale authorization.

For a retirement saver making a new purchase, National Gold Group's account coordination and markup explanation are the clearer starting point. Orion also offers an IRA service, so compare the proposed institutions and complete costs if both can meet your needs. The ownership connection explains the editorial emphasis; it does not replace the written evidence needed to choose an order.

How we checked this. Last checked: November 5, 2026. Orion services, National Gold Group and regulator primary material were read that day, supplementing accepted October 24 first-party research. Orion evidence covers commission-free client buyback, phone-confirmed invoice, insured collection and separate personal-vault service; no future bid or universal fee waiver is inferred. CFTC/FINRA guidance is linked to the actual PDF. The USD example is hypothetical.

Frequently asked questions

Is Orion's buyback always free?

In October 2026 Orion described a commission-free buyback. Request the current agreement and ask whether other costs, including shipping or inspection, apply. A waived commission does not establish the buyer's bid or guarantee a future price. Orion describes the commission-free service for metals it sold; confirm whether your items qualify under the current terms.

Which dealer has the lower spread?

Ask both companies for current prices on the same product. Request both the purchase amount and concurrent bid using the same item, quantity and conditions. Check whether the bids are binding and which deductions could affect proceeds. The commission described by Orion is only one part of the overall comparison.

Can I buy metal for delivery instead of an IRA?

Both companies described direct purchases in October 2026. Confirm current product, payment, shipment and insurance terms. Personal ownership differs from an IRA holding; a distribution from an IRA to fund a personal purchase can have tax consequences depending on your circumstances.

Does Orion name my IRA custodian in advance?

Ask Orion which custodian and depository are proposed for your account. General dealer assistance does not identify the legal institutions serving your particular IRA. The account application and storage agreement should name those parties; review their responsibilities and current fee schedules before authorizing a purchase.
