Priority Gold review

Priority Gold suits retirement savers who want to plan how to sell their metals, provided they accept the consignment restrictions and confirm their costs. Noble Gold Investments offers a published fee example that requires reconciliation with its current agreement, so compare complete proposals before deciding.

Who Priority Gold suits

Priority's buyback policy describes distinct exit routes with different conditions. Those distinctions are useful when planning a sale, but the current contract and a written bid for your specific product should determine the comparison. An available sale route is not a guarantee of a particular price or profit.

Priority suits someone who wants assistance with a physical precious-metals purchase and is willing to review the sale options before committing. Its IRA information describes a retirement-account service, and its buyback policy describes three sale routes with different restrictions. A buyer who may need to sell in stages should ask which current route accommodates that plan.

The arrangement is less suitable for someone who expects an advertised promotion to settle the complete price. The dealer's purchase quotation, custodian's account schedule and depository's storage agreement serve different purposes. A promotional benefit may depend on the size or type of purchase and may not eliminate the metal premium or later account costs.

Noble Gold Investments presents a fee example on its gold IRA page, and the charges that apply depend on the account agreement. Money Metals Exchange describes an IRA program alongside a depository service. Compare the same eligible product and full account documents before deciding which approach suits you.

What Priority Gold offers

Priority describes precious-metals IRA services and direct purchases of physical metal. Its product information presents coins and bars for buyers to consider. A personal purchase and an IRA purchase have different account and storage requirements, so decide which ownership arrangement you want before relying on a quotation.

The dealer's catalog may include products intended for different objectives. For an IRA, request product acceptance from the account administrator and its specifications. The IRS IRA FAQ explains special collectible rules and exceptions for qualifying bullion and coins. Availability through a dealer does not mean every product is accepted in a retirement account.

If a representative suggests a premium or collectible item, obtain a matching quote for another IRA-approved product as well. Compare the amount of metal, total purchase price and a contemporaneous offer for that product. The additional premium may reflect the product's characteristics, but it is not a guaranteed future resale value. Ask what benefit the specific choice provides for your objective.

A direct buyer should also review delivery and insurance. If you receive metal personally, determine where it will be stored and what coverage applies after arrival. An IRA holding follows the custodian's approved arrangement. The same company may facilitate both, but the contracts and responsibilities are not automatically identical.

Custodian and funding process

Priority's IRA setup information describes a process involving a retirement account and selected metals. The custodian administers the account, the dealer sells the product and a depository holds the physical asset. Confirm the names and responsibilities of those parties in your own application and agreements.

Ask the custodian how it accepts purchase instructions, issues statements and handles sales or distributions. Obtain the current opening and annual fee schedule, including transaction charges. A dealer's offer to assist with paperwork does not replace the custodian's approval or establish that the investment is suitable for your wider finances.

Existing retirement funds may be moved only through an appropriate method. An IRA transfer, an employer-plan rollover and a new contribution have different conditions. Consult the IRS guidance for general rules, then ask the current provider and receiving custodian which routes are available. An independent adviser can assess the consequences in your circumstances.

If your existing account must liquidate investments before a transfer, consider that change as part of the decision. Check whether the current plan allows the movement and whether any charges or restrictions apply. Verify the receiving instructions directly with the institutions involved. A promotion's deadline is not a reason to use a funding method you do not understand.

Priority Gold prices and promotions

The cost of a precious-metals purchase includes the dealer's quote, account and vault charges, and the eventual sale or distribution expenses. A dealer's price can include a premium over the underlying metal price, as the CFTC buyer advisory explains. Request a written quote for the exact item and quantity, together with the intended payment and ownership method.

Priority has advertised purchase-related promotions on its special-offers page. Confirm the current offer, qualification, duration and tax treatment in writing. A promotional metal product delivered outside an IRA should not be assumed to be an IRA asset or a tax-free benefit. Ask a tax adviser how the specific offer would be treated.

A benefit tied to a larger purchase or particular product can change the economics. Compare the complete metal price and account schedule with an offer that has no promotion. Ask whether the benefit applies to the product you would otherwise choose, and whether a different eligible item changes qualification. Do not assign a value to an offer whose conditions remain unresolved.

Ask for a contemporaneous indicative sale bid for the identical item. The difference between the purchase price and that bid is the immediate spread. A promotional credit or an advertised low fee does not eliminate it. The spread checker can illustrate the quoted difference, but neither the quote nor the tool predicts a future market price.

The complete fee request should identify:

  • The dealer's product price and any separate payment, shipping or insurance amount.
  • Opening, annual administration and transaction charges from the custodian.
  • Storage and insurance costs under the chosen depository agreement.
  • Transfer, sale, distribution, delivery and account-closing charges.
  • Each promotion's eligibility, covered costs, expiration and any tax-related conditions.

Use the fee calculator with the actual schedules and an assumed holding period. Keep undisclosed amounts as unknown until confirmed. A clear comparison holds the metal, quantity and account type constant and makes conditional benefits visible as separate items.

When a promotion supplies metal outside the retirement account, record it separately from the IRA purchase. The asset held personally and the metal recorded by the custodian have different owners and access arrangements. Check the promotion document for how the extra metal is delivered and valued, and ask the tax adviser how that benefit should be reported in your circumstances. Do not add the promotional item to the IRA statement or assume it will be available to satisfy a distribution from that account. If the promotion depends on buying a particular product, compare that product with the one you intended to buy before considering the value of the incentive.

Priority Gold's buyback routes

Priority's buyback policy identifies three routes for products originally purchased from the company. They differ in who finds the buyer, how the price is set and whether the product qualifies. The policy says the company cannot guarantee repurchase at a particular time or price.

RoutePublished terms and limits
Open marketThe seller sets the price and sells directly or through an online auction. Finding the buyer can require more time and effort.
Immediate liquidationPriority describes a buyback at the current wholesale bid, with metal sold to a national wholesaler. The bid can be lower than the original purchase price.
ConsignmentFor eligible investment-grade or numismatic products bought from Priority and held at least 60 months; bullion products, including bars and rounds, are excluded. Priority lists an 18% fee to find and secure a buyer.

The 18% consignment fee and the holding and product restrictions mean this route cannot be treated as an immediate cash offer for every holding. A bullion holder cannot use consignment, even for an item originally purchased from Priority. Open-market sales require a buyer, while an immediate liquidation uses the current wholesale bid once confirmed. Ask how the fee is calculated, what other expenses apply and whether a buyer has been secured. The policy does not promise a particular sale time or price. For an IRA, first confirm how the custodian and depository would authorize and carry out the proposed route.

Storage and ownership

The custodian should identify the depository for a retirement account and provide the relevant storage agreement. Ask whether the selected holdings are segregated or non-segregated, how that term is defined and what the account statement will show. A dealer's general discussion of vault storage is not a substitute for the actual agreement with the facility.

Review insurance separately. Determine which party is insured, the covered risks and exclusions, and the procedure for a claim. If metal must move between institutions, ask when transportation coverage starts and ends and who arranges it. The cost and coverage may differ for an IRA holding and a personally owned purchase.

A periodic statement may show a reference-price estimate instead of an actionable buyback offer. Ask the custodian how it calculates the figure. A valuation is useful for monitoring holdings, but the amount you receive after a sale depends on the actual bid and any charges at that time.

If you plan to receive metal from an IRA, obtain the account provider’s distribution instructions and independent tax advice. Receiving personal delivery from a cash purchase is a different transaction. In both cases, consider security and insurance after receipt rather than assuming the dealer's transit coverage continues indefinitely.

Hypothetical example: choosing an exit route

Imagine you own an investment-grade coin purchased from Priority, held for at least 60 months, and accepted for its consignment route. You later need to sell part of the retirement holding. This is a hypothetical illustration, not a current Priority quotation or a claim that any particular buyback route is available. The account's custodian and vault have confirmed the product and the proposed transaction.

Smaller denominations can make partial sales possible without liquidating the entire holding, but their combined premium can differ from a larger bar. Compare that additional acquisition cost with the flexibility you need and confirm the custodian can process the intended sale size.

Ask whether you may sell to a different buyer if Priority's current offer does not meet your needs. The custodian can explain the instructions required to transact with another dealer and the depository can identify any movement or verification charges. Compare the net result after those charges rather than assuming that the original seller must always be the buyer. For an IRA, any sale should follow the account's procedures so the proceeds are handled appropriately.

In this illustration, the saver intends to sell one coin and leave the remaining holdings in the IRA. The practical decision is whether the expected net proceeds from that one item meet the planned cash need, after the custodian and depository apply their own transaction and release procedures. If the asset cannot be sold in the required fraction, the saver may need to authorize a different combination of items. The account's statement can help identify the holdings, but its value is not necessarily an executable bid. Once the sale is completed, the saver can separately decide whether to leave the cash in the account or request a distribution under the account's rules.

Risks and questions before buying

Gold and other metals can lose value, and bullion produces neither dividends nor interest. Custody and account expenses remain relevant if prices are flat. Consider the proposed allocation within your entire retirement portfolio and whether you can hold it through unfavorable market changes.

The CFTC guidance for buyers encourage customers to understand dealer compensation and the total cost. Ask Priority to explain the purchase premium, an indicative bid and the costs of each sale option. Get the current terms in writing before relying on a historical policy or a phone explanation.

Before authorizing the purchase, answer these questions:

  • Which institutions will administer and store the IRA, and will they accept the selected item?
  • What is the full purchase quote and a contemporaneous sale bid for the identical metal?
  • What promotion applies, what conditions must be met and which costs remain?
  • Which buyback or consignment routes currently apply to the product, and what do they cost?
  • How can you sell part of the holding, transfer the account or request a distribution?

Priority's historical policy makes exit planning a useful part of the initial comparison. The current agreement may differ, so obtain it before deciding. Compare a second provider's matching product and full account charges, and choose the arrangement whose price and sale conditions fit your own plans.

To weigh the providers' account processes and resale questions, read National Gold Group and Priority Gold. Ask each seller for its current agreement and a bid on the same item.

Frequently asked questions

Does Priority Gold guarantee a buyback price?

Priority says it cannot guarantee repurchase at a particular time or price. Its policy describes open-market sale, immediate liquidation and eligible consignment routes, each with distinct conditions. Ask for the applicable agreement and a written bid for your specific metal; other institutions may charge for release or shipment. The immediate route uses a current wholesale bid; consignment has separate eligibility and timing conditions.

Is a promotional metal offer part of the IRA?

Do not assume it is. Ask how a current promotion is delivered, who owns the product and which conditions apply. A benefit outside the account can have different tax treatment from an IRA asset. Consult a tax professional about the specific offer before accepting it.

Can I sell only part of my IRA metal?

That depends on the products, the custodian's procedures and the current sale terms. Ask about transaction sizes, per-sale fees and how the depository releases the holding. Consider product denominations before buying if you expect to need several smaller sales rather than one full liquidation. Priority’s published consignment route excludes bullion and imposes a holding period, so a partial sale may require another route.

What should I compare with Noble Gold?

Request matching eligible bullion and compare the initial quotation, same-item bid, account and storage fees, and sale procedures. Noble's published fee example needs reconciliation with the current account agreement. Priority's policy describes three sale routes; its consignment option has a holding period, product restrictions and a fee.

How can I document whether an item qualifies for consignment?

Keep the original Priority invoice showing the product and purchase date, along with the account statement and later confirmations. The published policy limits consignment to eligible investment-grade or numismatic products bought from Priority and held for the required period; bullion is excluded. These records help identify the item but do not establish eligibility. Ask Priority to confirm it under the applicable agreement, and have the custodian explain the IRA sale instructions.
