APMEX vs JM Bullion: IRA and buyback

APMEX fits an existing self-directed IRA holder whose custodian can use its described ordering route for a known product. JM Bullion is the stronger fit for a bullion owner ready to lock a listed-item sale price online and follow its shipment and inspection conditions. Confirm present account compatibility and transaction terms for either choice.

How the two dealers differ

APMEX describes an IRA ordering process involving preferred custodians. In October 2026 APMEX named Equity Trust in that process. Confirm the institution available for your transaction. Its IRA information is a useful starting point if you want to check how a particular product moves from dealer to retirement account. Ask which custodian and depository would serve your actual order and whether your existing account is compatible.

In October 2026 JM Bullion offered eligible IRA products and named New Direction Trust Company. The company also described an online and telephone process for selling metal back. Its IRA page and sell-to-us information let you examine both sides of a potential transaction. Confirm the current conditions before treating either description as an offer.

Both are bullion sellers, but a dealer is not automatically your IRA custodian or depository. The APMEX review and JM Bullion review identify the documented company facts and remaining questions. Neither provider's historical service description proves which one has a lower price for the exact item today.

Compare the exact metal

Begin with the product, not an advertised starting price. Choose the same coin or bar, weight, quantity and payment method if both sellers offer it. Record each complete order amount, including any shipping, payment or handling charges that apply. Check when the quotation expires and whether the product is actually available under those terms.

If one seller offers a different brand, mint year or form, ask whether the difference matters to your intended purchase and later sale. Two products can contain the same amount of gold but have different premiums or buyer demand. A comparison that silently switches the item cannot isolate the dealer's pricing. Ask for the same item where possible and note any difference that remains.

In October 2026 JM Bullion offered eligible IRA coins and bars. APMEX also described eligible products in its IRA process. Ask the receiving custodian to confirm the precise item before authorizing an IRA purchase. A catalog label is useful for finding candidates but does not replace the account institution's acceptance and custody instructions.

A purchase quote and an executable bid for the same holding expose different sides of dealer pricing. The spread checker can compare the quoted amounts before separate account or shipping costs. Use equal quantities and a common point in time: a later bid includes a market change as well as the dealer’s terms, so it cannot isolate the original transaction gap. Keep the date and expiry of each offer with its item description.

What an IRA order requires

A gold IRA purchase needs an account custodian and an appropriate custody arrangement. In October 2026 APMEX named Equity Trust among its preferred custodians, while JM Bullion named New Direction Trust. Those were options in October 2026; confirm availability today. Existing self-directed account holders should confirm that their custodian can process an order from the selected dealer.

Find out how the custodian receives an invoice, verifies the item, pays the dealer and directs delivery to the depository. Ask when you authorize the order and how the account statement will identify it. A dealer's order confirmation and the custodian's account record serve different purposes. Keep both so you can reconcile the product and quantity after settlement.

The IRS identifies an exception to the collectibles rule for certain bullion that satisfies the applicable fineness and physical-possession conditions. Its collectibles guidance also describes certain eligible coins. Ask the custodian to confirm the item and holding arrangement rather than assuming every product made of gold is eligible. The eligible metals guide expands on the distinction.

If your funds are still in another retirement account, confirm eligibility and transfer instructions before placing a time-sensitive order. The sending administrator and receiving custodian each have a role. A direct movement and a distribution paid to you are different transactions, so obtain advice on your circumstances if the paperwork or account type is unclear.

Personal delivery is a different purchase

If you buy with personal funds, ask the dealer about payment, shipment, signature, insurance and what happens if a package is delayed or damaged. JM Bullion offered direct-order shipping in October 2026; check its current policy. APMEX also sells bullion through its catalog, but request the current terms for your specific transaction rather than assuming that historical shipping thresholds still apply.

Personal ownership puts the storage decision in your hands. You may consider a home safe or a separate storage provider, with your own security and insurance responsibilities. It does not turn a personal holding into an IRA asset. The cash vs IRA guide compares direct possession with account custody.

For an IRA order, do not substitute a home delivery address for the custodian's approved process. Confirm the receiving institution and destination before the dealer ships. If a seller offers both personal and IRA purchases, be clear about which transaction you are making and how its documents identify the owner.

Compare selling and buyback terms

In October 2026 APMEX offered a selling process; confirm its present threshold and terms before relying on it. JM Bullion’s sell-to-us page states a $1,000 minimum purchase amount for its buying service and offers online or telephone contact.

For listed products, JM describes selecting items and quantities online and locking a price at checkout. It sends mailing instructions, then inspects the received items before approving the sale. The page states payment is issued 3 to 7 business days after receipt, while also saying payment follows approval. If timing matters, obtain the applicable current confirmation and clarify how inspection affects settlement.

The online route is useful for an owner who already knows the items and wants to see an available bid. It does not prove that the amount is higher than APMEX’s offer or that a later quote will match today’s. Compare the actual items, shipping arrangements and net proceeds, and confirm whether an IRA custodian can authorize the intended sale.

Fees beyond the dealer's quote

An IRA account may have setup, administration, storage, transaction or distribution charges from its custodian or depository. Request those schedules separately from the dealer's order total. An inexpensive product quote does not establish that the proposed account has the lowest recurring cost, and a low account fee does not show the dealer's buyback bid.

For a personal purchase, include your chosen storage, insurance and eventual sale costs. If a seller offers a shipping promotion, ask whether the order qualifies and what happens if it does not. Avoid relying on historical thresholds or promotions when the current terms can change. Request a final checkout total and written order conditions.

Compare the same anticipated holding period, recognizing that recurring charges can change. Keep the account cost estimate separate from the immediate dealer spread. The fee calculator can show the effect of your own assumptions, but it cannot guarantee future fee schedules or market prices.

Check custody and withdrawal rights

Ask the custodian where the metal will be held, how it is recorded and whether the storage is segregated. A segregated arrangement may identify particular items, while non-segregated custody may combine equivalent holdings, depending on the contract. The storage guide explains what to ask about exact return rights and records.

Request the applicable insurance information, including the insured party, property, exclusions and deductible. Coverage for specified custody risks is not a guarantee against a lower market value. If you later want to sell, ask whether the buyer can receive metal directly from the depository and who bears the release, shipment and inspection costs.

An IRA’s sale does not by itself instruct a personal withdrawal. Have the custodian explain the posting of proceeds and, separately, the valuation and reporting of any distribution you request. Consult a qualified tax professional about the account and your circumstances before directing a distribution. A dealer's description of a buyback program does not determine your personal tax result.

Payment and delivery before checkout

JM Bullion’s November 4, 2026 payment schedule listed card, bank wire, paper check, electronic check, PayPal, digital wallets and other methods. That dated schedule displayed a 4% discount for check, electronic check and wire, while card payments had no discount. These are dated terms; confirm today’s final amount and applicable order limits.

The payment choice affects the total you can compare with APMEX’s quote. Ask each seller to price the same item and quantity using the payment route you can actually use. A card total and a bank-transfer total may reflect different conditions, processing times or payment risk. Get APMEX’s total for the payment method you will use, with its current limits and conditions, before comparing the two offers.

For a personal order, delivery is part of the transaction. Check the destination, signature requirements, coverage during shipment and procedure for reporting a missing or damaged parcel. Keep the confirmation and any applicable policy. If buying through an IRA, follow the custodian’s invoice and delivery instructions instead of assuming a personal checkout address is appropriate. The custodian must accept the precise product and arrange payment under the account agreement.

A buyer who already holds bullion may care more about the eventual sale process than the first checkout. JM’s inspection-dependent settlement is a separate obligation from the buyer’s checkout payment. Compare that route with APMEX’s applicable policy for your own products and obtain net proceeds after any deductions. A convenient payment method does not establish the better later resale price.

The November 4 terms also listed different order limits by method:

MethodNovember 4 minimumNovember 4 maximum
Card$0$250,000
Paper check$0$100,000
Bank wire$500$1,000,000

For a larger order, the method chosen can determine whether the entire transaction falls within a listed limit. For a smaller purchase, the dated wire minimum is relevant even before comparing the discount. These figures are a dated example of why a payment preference should be checked against the order, not current assurances. The seller may change limits, and a custodian may use a separate payment process for an IRA.

The table concerns paying JM for a purchase. It is separate from the seller’s payment after JM inspects a buyback shipment. A buyer planning both transactions should examine each agreement independently and avoid assuming that the same method, limit or timing applies in both directions.

Choose for the transaction you intend

APMEX fits an IRA purchase when the intended product and its described ordering route work with your account institution. An existing account’s custodian and facility must be able to process the invoice, payment and delivery; a personal checkout procedure does not establish that compatibility. If a change is necessary, compare its costs and timing before opening another account.

JM Bullion fits an owner preparing to sell listed bullion through an online price lock, subject to receipt and approval. Compare the actual net proceeds with APMEX’s present selling terms for those same items. Neither route establishes a permanently better bid, and the purchase-payment schedule does not determine how or when a buyback is paid.

Retain the final order confirmation, custody instructions and applicable sale agreement. Check the product, quantity and ownership record on the account statement after settlement. If a revised quote arrives while account authorization is pending, match its expiry with the institution’s payment process before approving it. This avoids choosing a payment method or a convenient sale route for a transaction that the account cannot carry out.

How we checked this. Company evidence includes October 24 research, JM Bullion’s November 4 payment schedule and November 5 selling page. Regulator materials were checked November 5. The article compares dated published terms and account requirements; it reports no test purchase, live matched quotes or worked hypothetical calculation.

Frequently asked questions

Which dealer is cheaper for gold?

Current prices depend on the item and terms quoted today. Request the same product, quantity and payment terms from each, including shipping and applicable charges. A same-time buyback quote helps you assess the round-trip gap as well as the initial price.

Can I buy IRA metal from either company?

Both offered IRA-related services in October 2026. Confirm that your custodian accepts the exact product and can process the proposed dealer's invoice and depository delivery. Have the account institution confirm the item instead of relying solely on a catalog label.

Does JM Bullion offer an online selling process?

In October 2026 JM Bullion offered online and telephone selling routes. Check current products, price commitment, shipping and inspection conditions before relying on it. A convenient process does not guarantee a specific future bid or establish that it is higher than another buyer's offer.

Can IRA metal be shipped to my home?

An IRA purchase should follow the custodian's approved custody instructions. Receiving metal personally may constitute a distribution whose consequences depend on your account and circumstances. Before requesting personal delivery, obtain the custodian’s procedure and independent tax advice for your situation.
