Why you might look past
Goldco
You may like
Goldco's rollover help and still feel uneasy about two things it leaves open: what the metal costs and what the buyback promise really covers.
Goldco's silver IRA page in November 2026 advertised a "Highest BuyBack Guarantee". Our disclosure study found 4 of the 42 operating companies using the word guarantee for their buyback, and none of them promises to repay the price you paid. A buyback guarantee is a promise to make an offer, not a promise about the size of that offer.
Price is the second gap. In the November 6, 2026 price survey, we found no per-product prices on the pages we checked for 14 of the 20 IRA-focused gold companies whose sites we could read.
Goldco was not one of the three firms that showed a buyable per-coin price, so you only see its metal cost once a representative quotes it.
Goldco also appeared among the 5 of the 42 companies advertising free metals for qualifying customers in October 2026, and a bonus tells you nothing about the premium on the coins you actually buy.
Goldco says it works with major self-directed IRA custodians but, in our data, does not name one for you up front. It has described separate IRA and personal-purchase minimums; we hold no current figure, so ask
Goldco for the amount in writing. If any of these gaps matters to you, the firms that follow each close one of them differently. For a direct side-by-side, see
National Gold Group vs
Goldco and

Goldco, and the full
Goldco review.
National Gold Group: a stated markup and storage offer you can test
National Gold Group is our featured first alternative, and Gold IRA Master gives it this placement to promote its services. Where
Goldco leaves you with a guarantee label,
National Gold Group's transparency page describes a wholesale reference plus a disclosed markup, a conditional lifetime storage fee waiver, a $0 charge for its own IRA setup service and a no-fee buyback. Its IRA information describes funding by rollover or transfer and names depository examples.
It suits you if you want an assisted IRA purchase and would rather question a stated pricing method than a bonus offer. It did not publish per-product prices online either, so ask for the reference, markup and total on the exact coin, and the conditions attached to the storage waiver. Read the
National Gold Group review and the head-to-head with
Goldco before you call.
Augusta Precious Metals: named institutions and a teaching session first
Augusta's gold IRA page named
Equity Trust Company as its preferred custodian and
Delaware Depository for storage in October 2026, and it offered an educational web conference. That is the concrete difference from
Goldco: you know which institutions to research before you speak to anyone, rather than asking which of several custodians you will be placed with.
Choose
Augusta if you are new to physical-metals IRAs and want to understand the mechanics before you see a product. Ask for the order quote and both institutions' schedules after the session. See the
Augusta review and
Augusta vs
Goldco.
Advantage Gold: a choice between named custodians
If keeping or choosing your own custodian matters more than the sales format,
Advantage Gold is the cleaner fit. Its FAQ named
STRATA Trust Company and
Equity Trust Company among recommended custodians and identified depository options in October 2026.
Goldco's general statement about working with major custodians does not give you that list in advance.
It suits a saver who already has a relationship with one of those custodians or wants to compare two schedules before ordering. Read the
Advantage Gold review and
National Gold Group vs
Advantage Gold.
Noble Gold Investments: published figures you can check against the contract
Noble Gold printed numbers where
Goldco gave descriptions. Its gold IRA page, rendered in November 2026, showed a $20,000 IRA minimum and a $50 setup fee. It also offers a Texas depository option, a choice to weigh if you prefer metal stored in that state.
Choose
Noble if you want to verify a published minimum and fee before you start, and your purchase clears that minimum. Published figures can change, so match them against the custodian agreement. See the
Noble Gold review and
National Gold Group vs
Noble Gold.

Birch Gold Group: four metals and named custodians
Birch's precious-metals IRA page covers gold, silver, platinum and palladium, and its FAQ names custodians and describes its buyback.
Goldco also discusses all four metals, so the difference is in disclosure:
Birch names the institutions you would be working with.
Birch suits a saver who wants platinum or palladium in the mix and wants to research custodians first. Its FAQ minimum is historical; ask for the current one. Read the
Birch Gold Group review,
National Gold Group vs
Birch and

Noble Gold.
American Hartford Gold: an agreement that spells out the buyback limit
If
Goldco's guarantee wording bothers you,
American Hartford Gold takes the opposite approach in writing. Its historical transaction agreement describes product spreads and states that repurchase is not guaranteed. Its IRA page snapshot named
Equity Trust and
Delaware Depository.
Choose it if you prefer to read the spread and exit terms in a contract rather than a marketing line. Ask for the current agreement, since ours is a historical copy. See the
American Hartford Gold review and

Moving metal you already hold with
Goldco
Switching dealers does not have to mean selling. If you already own metal in an IRA arranged through
Goldco, the metal sits with a custodian and a depository, not with the dealer. You can ask the custodian whether the holdings can move in kind to a new account, or whether you can simply place future purchases through a different dealer while the existing metal stays where it is. Each route has its own charges, so ask the current custodian for its transfer and closing fees before you commit.
If you sell instead, ask {c} for a written bid on each item and compare it with a same-time bid from the new dealer. A sale inside the IRA is not a distribution, but taking the money or the metal out of the account can be. The IRS rollover guidance separates direct rollovers, trustee-to-trustee transfers and payments made to you; a trustee transfer keeps the money out of your hands. Ask both custodians to handle it directly, and consult a tax adviser if the route is unclear.
Before a new order, ask whether the new dealer's custodian accepts the products you already hold. Mixing dealers inside one account is possible only if the custodian allows it, and
Goldco's general statement about working with major custodians does not tell you which one holds yours; your account statement does.
Put
Goldco and an alternative on the same quote
Each alternative answers a different objection. Start with the one that matches yours:
- You want the markup on your order stated:
National Gold Group. - You want named institutions and a teaching session first:
Augusta Precious Metals. - You want to choose between two named custodians:
Advantage Gold. - You want published minimum and setup figures:
Noble Gold Investments. - You want platinum or palladium with named custodians:
Birch Gold Group. - You want the buyback limit written into the contract:
American Hartford Gold.
Whichever you choose, the decision still rests on the written quote, the custodian and depository schedules and a same-time buyback bid for the exact product.
Ask
Goldco and one alternative for the same coin, the same quantity, a same-time buyback bid and the custodian and depository schedules. Ask
Goldco to state in writing the conditions of its buyback guarantee and any free-metal offer, and whether the bonus changes the price of what you buy. Then run the numbers:
- The fee calculator adds the account, storage and transaction charges from each written schedule over the years you expect to hold.
- The spread checker shows the gap between a purchase quote and a same-time buyback bid for the same item.
- The annual fee comparison lines up recurring custodian and storage charges side by side.
The cheaper arrangement is the one with the lower total across purchase, holding and sale, not the one with the larger bonus.
Frequently asked questions
Does
Goldco's buyback guarantee mean I get my money back?
No such promise appears in our data. In our disclosure study, 4 of the 42 operating companies used the word guarantee for their buyback, and none promises to repay the price you paid. Ask
Goldco for the written conditions and a current bid on the exact product.
Which
Goldco alternative names its custodian up front?
Augusta named
Equity Trust Company as preferred custodian, and
Advantage Gold named
STRATA Trust Company and
Equity Trust Company among recommended custodians, both in October 2026. Confirm the current arrangement before you open an account.
What is
Goldco's minimum investment?
Goldco has described separate IRA and personal-purchase minimums, but we do not hold a current figure. Ask
Goldco for the amount in writing, and ask whether later additions must each meet it.
Is a free-metals offer a reason to choose a dealer?
Not on its own. The offer does not show the premium on the metal you buy. Compare the full written quote, the account schedules and a same-time buyback bid instead.
